1 The beginning of "Starlink"

SpaceX established its subsidiary "Starlink" department in 2015 , which is responsible for the development and operation of "Starlink" low-Earth orbit broadband Internet communication satellites.

Musk declared his intention to: "Provide network communications for 3% or 5% of the world's rural and remote areas that are not covered by the ground network" "Starlink" satellite network service.

"Starlink" satellites are mainly divided into two versions:

  • Version 1.0: No inter-satellite laser communication capability
  • Version 1.5: Capable of inter-satellite laser communication

The advantages of "Starlink" are: high transmission rate (download speed up to 400Mbps, upload speed up to 18.60Mbps, delay 27 milliseconds), wide coverage, large number of satellites, low cost, strong overall survivability, small shape of ground terminal, easy frontier deployment, etc.

2 Development of "Starlink"

After the deployment of the Starlink system is completed, the number of satellites will reach as many as 42,000 , and it will be possible to realize the transit of dozens or even hundreds of satellites in the same sky anytime, anywhere.

At the same time, Starlink satellites can fully cover optical, infrared and SAR radar imaging capabilities by carrying a variety of remote sensing payloads , so that they not only have high and medium spatial resolutions , but also have high temporal resolution and high spectral resolution , so as to fully realize nearly all-weather and all-weather battlefield reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities , making the future battlefield more transparent.

The completion of the first phase of 12,000 satellites will put more than 800,000 Linux computers running in space. , when all 42,000 satellites are deployed, there will be at least 2 million units.

In this way , a "space-based cloud computing" platform and a " space-based big data" center are         built to realize faster processing of collected data on the star and carry out independent judgment and intelligent decision-making, which greatly shortens the time of OODA ring judgment and decision-making .

-------The difference between Beidou and Starlink: the nature of the two jobs is different, and they cannot be compared

  • One is a navigation satellite and the other is an Internet satellite.
  • The Beidou satellite navigation system is a global satellite navigation system independently developed by my country, and it is also the third mature satellite navigation system after GPS and GLONASS.
  • The Starlink satellite is a project of the US Space Exploration Technology Corporation, which plans to build a "Starlink" network consisting of about 12,000 satellites in space from 2019 to 2024 to provide Internet services.

3 The strategic significance of "Starlink"

Although the Starlink project is under the guise of "civilian use" in the name of providing high-speed Internet services , it has a strong background in the US military and military project cooperation.

The U.S. military is likely to realize the militarized application of the Starlink system by carrying different satellite loads such as reconnaissance, navigation, and weather , and enhance the U.S. military’s combat capabilities in reconnaissance and remote sensing, communication relay, navigation and positioning, combat collisions, and space occlusion , so that the U.S. military will take the initiative in the future battlefield.

In modern warfare, command and control is the nerve center of warfare , and the chain of command is a neural network that connects and hinges various combat units and combat elements .

To study how to deal with the threat of Starlink, it is even more necessary to plan ahead, coordinate planning and accelerate the construction of my country's low-orbit satellite constellation, and strive for the strategic high point of low-orbit constellation resources, technology and application innovation, so as to actively respond to changes in the form of future wars and maintain my country's space rights and national strategic initiative.
