VirtualBox

On October 10, 2022, VirtualBox 7.0.0 is released!

Oracle today announced a major new release of Oracle VM VirtualBox, its high-performance, cross-platform virtualization software. See the changelog for details.

Introduction to VirtualBox

VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for business and home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature-rich, high-performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution (sysin) freely available as open source software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 3. See the introduction in " About VirtualBox ".

Currently, VirtualBox runs (sysin) on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Solaris hosts, and supports a large number of guest operating systems , including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 ), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x, and 4.x), Solaris, and OpenSolaris, OS/2 and OpenBSD.

VirtualBox is actively developed and released frequently, and has an ever-growing list of features, supported guest operating systems, and platforms on which it runs. VirtualBox is a community masterpiece backed by a dedicated company: everyone is encouraged to contribute, and Oracle ensures that the product remains professional-quality.

new features

VirtualBox 7.0.0 (released 2022-10-10)

This is a major update. The following major new features have been added:

  • Virtual machines can now be fully encrypted, including VM configuration logs and saved state (CLI only for now)
  • OCI: Cloud VMs can be added to Virtual Machine Manager and controlled as local VMs
  • OCI: Cloud networking can now be configured via the Network Manager tool in the same way as host-only and NAT networking
  • GUI: Added a new utility similar to "top" or "resource monitor", which lists performance statistics for running clients (CPU usage, RAM usage, disk I/O rate, etc.)
  • GUI: New vm wizard redesigned to integrate unattended guest OS installation and have a more streamlined workflow
  • GUI: Added a new help viewer widget to navigate and search the user manual
  • GUI: Added a new notification center (sysin), unifying most of the running progress and error reporting around the GUI
  • GUI: Improved theme support on all platforms. Linux and macOS use native engines, while Windows hosts have separate implementations.
  • GUI: Large icons updated.
  • Audio recording: now uses Vorbis as the default audio format for WebM containers. Opus is no longer used.
  • Audio: Added "default" host driver type (sysin) to move virtual machines (devices) between platforms without explicitly changing audio drivers. When selecting the "Default" driver, the platform's best audio backend option will be used. This is the default for newly created VMs.
  • Guest Control: Implemented initial support for automatic update of guest additions for Linux guests
  • Guest control: implement the function of waiting and/or restarting the Guest when updating the Guest via VBoxManage
  • VBoxManage: Added the Guest control "waitrunlevel" subcommand, which can wait for the Guest to reach a certain runlevel
  • Windows hosts: Added experimental support for running autostart VMs in session 0 to allow running VMS when user is not logged in (disabled by default, see manual)
  • macOS hosts: Removed all kernel extensions. VirtualBox relies entirely on the hypervisor and vmnet frameworks that Apple now provides. Currently the implementation lacks "internal networking" functionality. This will be provided at a later date.
  • macOS hosts: Provides a developer preview package for systems with Apple silicon CPUs. This is unsupported work in progress and is known to have very modest performance.
  • Linux Guest Additions: Redesigned Guest screen resizing functionality, added basic integration with some Guest desktop environments
  • Devices: New 3D support based on DirectX 11 (and DXVK on non-Windows hosts)
  • Devices: Added virtual IOMMU device (Intel and AMD variants)
  • Devices: Added virtual TPM 1.2 and 2.0 devices
  • Devices: EHCI and XHCI USB controller devices are now part of the open source base package
  • EFI: Added support for Secure Boot
  • Debugging: Added experimental support for guest debugging via GDB and highly experimental support for guest debugging via KD/WinDbg

Additionally, the following items have been fixed and/or added:

  • OCI: Enhanced cloud network functionality for local virtual machines, now local virtual machines can connect to cloud networks
  • GUI: Improved behavior of virtual machine list and various VM related tools when multiple items are selected
  • GUI: On available platforms, added a new option to disable the host's screensaver
  • GUI: Redesigned Global Preferences, Machine Settings and Wizards to improve stability and usability
  • GUI: Improved mouse handling in multi-monitor situations on X11 platforms
  • GUI: Medium enumeration engine reworked to improve performance
  • GUI: NAT network stuff moved from global preferences to global network manager tool
  • GUI: Extension Package Manager moved from Global Preferences to Global Tools
  • GUI: Improved overall accessibility
  • GUI: Migrated to latest Qt version.
