1. Use DNSPod to implement DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name)

For Qunhui to achieve external network access, Qunhui itself also provides QuickConnect, referred to as QC. However, since Synology's QC is an existing management protocol, the access speed is very slow and the user experience is poor. So we need to add other three-party DDNS to access our Synology NAS system from the external network.

At present, Tencent's DNSPod dynamic domain name resolution supports Synology NAS, and it can also be said that Synology NAS supports DNSPod dynamic domain name resolution. To enable DNSPod to access the external network on Synology, we must meet the following conditions:

serial number condition illustrate
1 A Tencent Cloud account is required Just register on the Tencent Cloud platform
2 Need to have your own domain name It can be purchased on Tencent Cloud Platform or other platforms
3 Need to have a public IP

If you use Telecom, you can apply for a public network IP (dynamic IP) at Telecom

4 A Synology NAS is required

In fact, there are many third-party service providers that implement DDNS dynamic domain name resolution, and many of them can provide support for Synology NAS, as shown in the following table:

The above are the three-party service providers that Synology can choose to support DDNS. In version 7.1 of the Synology system, DNSPod.cn ranks first, which shows that the official strongly recommends the use of DNSPod. I used DNSExit before, and it was very convenient. I don’t know why, but after version 7.1, DNSExit added a * in front of it, and the previous parameter settings couldn’t pass. I don’t know what the * in front of it means. Anyway, it can't be used anymore. So today I will share the settings of the officially recommended DNSPod.

2. Clarification of public concepts

First of all, let's clarify a few concepts, so that it is easy to understand when doing the following steps.

serial number concept illustrate
1 domain name manager Indicates that your domain name is managed by the service provider. Generally speaking, the domain name management provider will also provide domain name resolution services. In fact, whoever you pay the domain name service fee to is your domain name manager. The domain name resolution address of the domain name resolution service provider can be set in the system of the domain name manager.
2 Domain Name Resolution Service Provider

Domain name resolution service providers are the ones that implement domain name resolution. This is the service provider that truly implements domain name functions. Most domain name resolution service providers provide free resolution (fees will provide more functions).

Generally speaking, after the domain name manager has been determined, the domain name resolution service provider can be selected arbitrarily. After the domain name resolution service provider is selected, the resolution address of the corresponding selected domain name resolution service provider can be set in the domain name management provider’s system.

For example, for my own domain name, the domain name manager is Western Digital , and the domain name resolution service provider in the early stage is Alibaba Cloud. Because Alibaba Cloud domain name resolution does not provide the function of supporting Synology DDNS, I transferred the domain name resolution to Tencent Cloud. It is DNSPod.cn. This is the DNS service of Tencent Cloud.

Most users have the same domain name management provider and domain name resolution service provider (mine is not one), and if they are not one, they can also be migrated.

3. Detailed setting steps on Tencent DNSPod

1. Open the DNSPod.cn website and log in

2. After successful login, select [My Domain Name] -> [Add Domain Name]

In the picture above, I have added 2 domain names. If my first domain name is xyz.com, let's use xyz.com as an example!

3. Adding a Synology NAS requires a second-level domain name (or a first-level domain name)

Select the first domain name and add the following secondary domain name: html2exe

In this way, what we expect is that the external domain name of Synology NAS is html2exe.xyz.com. In the future, we can use the html2exe.xyz.com address to access our Synology NAS, and the port can be set according to the actual situation.

 4. Create a Synology NAS in the DNSPod network and set DDNS required parameters:

First look at the parameters required by the Synology NAS (this interface is on the Synology NAS):

Host name : html2exe.xyz.com we set above

The username/email and password /key are the two parameters that need to be created on the DNSPod network below.

Click the user icon after successful login on the DNSPod website, and then select the menu [API key]:

Select the DNSPod Token tab and press 【Create Key】. Because I have already created it, [Create Key] appears. If there is no key, the interface is slightly different.

Creating a key requires secondary identity authentication. After the authentication is successful, set a key name to complete the key creation.

Note that the ID at this time is the username/email parameter in the NAS  , and the Token is the password/key parameter in the NAS  . After saving so far, we have obtained all the parameters that Synology NAS needs to set.

4. Detailed setting steps in Synology NAS

1. Log in to the Synology NAS, enter [Control Panel] -> [External Access] -> [DDNS tab] -> [Add]

Service provider selection drop-down menu, select DNSPod.cn

serial number parameter value
1 service provider Drop-down selection: DNSPod.cn
2 host name html2exe.xyz.com
3 username/email Select the parameter ID when creating the key on the DNSPod network
4 password/key Select the parameter Token when creating a key on the DNSPod network

If the above parameter settings are normal, press [Test Connection] and it will display green normal , indicating that it has been set successfully. At this point, our NAS can already access the external network through the domain name html2exe.xyz.com. If the IP address of our NAS changes, our domain name html2exe.xyz.com will also be automatically updated. In this way, the function of accessing the NAS from the external network is realized!

5. Postscript

Recently, my Synology NAS suddenly failed to turn on. Then I searched for the purchase records at that time and searched for the official after-sales service. I was very disappointed. I felt the same as other users on the Internet, that is, Synology has no after-sales service phone number, and can only communicate back and forth through emails. . And after reporting for repairs, it was said that a service provider would call me. We could only wait passively and could not take the initiative to contact. Later, the hardware engineer of Synology called me the next day. I got the following information: 1. In the name of the Synology model, the first one or two digits indicate the number of disks, and the last two digits indicate the year of listing. For example, DS218+ means 2 bays, a product launched in 2018. 2. Due to domestic policy reasons, Synology cannot set up a service number similar to 400 (I don't understand the reason). 3. Synology can repair, but the cost cannot be determined for the time being. I called the 400 service number of my seller, Jingdong Qunhui Store, and the other party replied that there is no need to repair it, and the repair cost is almost as high as a new one. I couldn't wait for the official phone call, so I handed the machine to a maintenance center in Zhongguancun, Beijing. The other party quoted a price of about 200 yuan. After receiving my machine, the other party said that my machine was moldy and rusty. If the CPU is burned, it will cost hundreds of dollars. My machine has been powered on for 24 hours, and it is impossible to rust. I have no choice but not to repair it, and sold the equipment as scrap to a repair point. This kind of maintenance is also a big pit (if it is face-to-face maintenance, it is probably much better, everyone must be careful when submitting repairs), you need to pay attention! I just don't understand if Synology can quickly respond to the maintenance of out-of-warranty equipment. For such a large company, the after-sales service of out-of-warranty equipment is really unsatisfactory!
