[Contribution Tutorial] Academia ID Card - the principle, registration and use of ORCID

A growing number of researchers use ORCID to ensure that their published papers are uniquely associated with their names. In academia, in order to better identify the author, it  is urgent to give researchers a second "identity card", namely ORCID .

For Chinese scholars, due to the need to use Chinese pinyin when submitting to international journals, a large number of names have been replaced by false names or false names. The emergence of ORCID can solve the ambiguity of scientists' names.

In addition, there are many journal submission systems now, and the author has multiple mailboxes. If a unique ID is not used to mark it, it is easy to "fake" the results. Researchers can register their own ORCID iD very easily and free of charge through the ORCID official website, and then they can add their own publication information and peer review activities to build their own personal profile page.

What are ORCIDs?

The full name of ORCID is Open Researcher and Contributor ID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID, www.orcid.org). services to a range of stakeholders, including publishers.

The number of ORCID iD numbers registered by researchers around the world has reached more than 5 million, and more than 9,000 journals collect the author's ORCID iD number during the manuscript submission stage and add it to the metadata of the paper. Publishing groups and associations including Wiley, Springer Nature, AAAS/Science, IEEE, Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), American Chemical Society (ACS), etc. have signed ORCID open letters to support the development and application of ORCID, and issued corresponding policy requirements Authors are required to provide their ORCID ID numbers when submitting manuscripts to their journals. More than 800 universities, scientific research funds, government agencies, publishing houses, etc. have joined ORCID institutional members, and through ORCID institutional member APIs, they can connect scientific research management systems, fund management systems, institutional knowledge bases, manuscript submission and review systems, data platforms, etc., to achieve related Automatic data push and seamless connection.

How ORCID works

The process of personally registering an ORCID iD number is simple, convenient and free of charge. ORCID is people-centered and assigns a lifetime valid unique identification code to every scientific researcher in the world. And on this basis, all relevant scientific research activities and achievements of scientific researchers are accurately matched and connected, thus becoming an information hub and underlying connection mechanism, and promoting the flow of relevant information between different systems.

The information that can be associated in the ORCID record of each scientific researcher includes education experience, work experience, published papers, academic association membership, honors and awards, conference reports, review contributions, research funds, etc. In addition to being updated by the owner of the ORCID iD number (research personnel), these information can also be directly updated by authorized corresponding institutions, which can not only reduce the burden on the research personnel to manage these information, but also have the role of institutional certification and enhance the corresponding information. credibility.

ORCID's workflow generally consists of three main steps:

Authenticate: When scientific researchers provide their own ORCID iD to corresponding institutions (such as journal publishers), they need to confirm that the iD is indeed owned by the account owner (scientific researcher) by logging in with their own ORCID account password, and cannot Provide the ORCID iD to the other party by directly copying and pasting.

Connect: The backstage of the institution connects the identity of the researcher, the ORCID iD of the researcher and the achievements or activities of the researcher through the corresponding mechanism. For example, the journal can accurately match the authorship of the scientific researcher's paper (name, unit, etc.), the author's ORCID ID number and the DOI number of the paper (the unique identification code of the paper).

Synchronize:  After obtaining the permission of the ORCID iD owner, the corresponding organization can directly update the information such as papers and funds to the ORCID record of the scientific researcher, which not only reduces the burden on the scientific researcher to manage these information, but also can provide corresponding Records are authenticated to enhance credibility. Then the information can be promoted to the systems of other institutions, so as to realize the automatic flow of relevant information, improve the efficiency of information management, and at the same time ensure the accurate matching and timeliness of information.

Why use ORCID iD?

1. Through ORCID iD, you will get credit protection for all your papers. During your career, you may change names (e.g. follow your spouse's surname), institution, country or field of study, but no matter where you are, ORCID iD will connect you closely to your research work.

2. Store your current email address. Even if you change jobs and email addresses, ORCID iD ensures that you can be contacted. This feature is especially important if you are the corresponding author on a paper.

3. Shorten the time for paper submission and fund application. The application of ORCID is becoming more and more popular, and has been adopted by many large publishing houses such as PLOS, Nature, Elsevier, and funding agencies such as Welltrust and NIH. When submitting papers and applying for funds, these institutions only need you to provide your ORCID id number, which will free you from repeatedly filling in addresses, work experience, published papers, names of collaborators and institutions, etc., greatly shortening the time.

4. Peer review confirmation. At present, some publishing houses and funding agencies recognize peer review work based on ORCID iD number records, including journal paper review, conference proceedings review, post-publication review, fund project review and third-party academic evaluation, etc.

5. Automatic update. You can use the automatic update function to associate your ORCID data with different systems such as fund applications, paper submissions, and scientific research information management systems. For example, after you publish a paper, CrossRef will automatically update your ORCID information.

6. You can control the information displayed in your ORCID profile. Through the "Privacy Settings" function, you can choose "Open to everyone", "Open to trusted people" and "Open only to yourself" to control the information publicly displayed in your ORCID profile.

7. ORCID is an open source, non-profit organization. If you have an ORCID number, you can freely discuss any issue in the feedback forum, and you can also provide various good suggestions for promoting the development of ORCID.

Are ORCID iD numbers at risk?

Some academics worry that predatory journals are trying to obtain ORCID iD numbers as evidence of their legitimacy. In fact, ORCID has been aware of this problem and solved it by deleting accounts and other measures. In addition, this issue will not affect individual scholars.

How to get an ORCID iD number?

It's very simple and hassle-free, just take 30 seconds to enter your name and email address at https://orcid.org/register to complete the registration. After successful registration, you can obtain an ORCID iD number, which will accompany your lifelong academic ID card.

Note here, there is a description, that is, the default privacy status of the registration information (works, background, funds, etc.), where you need to set who can see the information I submit: everyone/trusted cooperation The registrant/only himself, the registrant can choose according to his own needs.

Add results to ORCID

1. Log in to your ORCID account. Go to "My ORCID Records"

2. Click "Add Result".

3. Select any one of the following 3 options:

Import results and associate with ORCID. Several ORCID members have built search and linking tools that allow you to import information about publications and other works from other databases into ORCID records, either from the ORCID website or from other corresponding database websites.

Other beneficiaries of ORCID

In addition to scientific researchers and scientific journals, funders, scientific research, personnel and other departments will also benefit from using ORCID for statistics, analysis, evaluation and management of academic output.

(1) Fund sponsors can use the ORCID system to accurately and systematically inquire about the basic information of fund applicants, published papers and works, and previously applied fund projects. Whether all these scientific research outputs are relevant to the sub-fund application Favorable, whether there is academic misconduct, it is convenient for funders to quickly and accurately screen applicants.

(2) Scientific research institutions use ORCID to systematically track, manage, publish, and disseminate their own scientific research results, and realize multi-angle and three-dimensional management of papers, research plans, books, and experimental materials; connect scientific research information to improve scientific research output The visibility of publications and scientific research achievements, and create a good academic reputation and academic influence.

(3) The personnel department can use ORCID to form the academic resumes of the scientific research personnel in the unit, and use it in various situations such as scientific research force promotion, scientific research teaching evaluation, etc. Form scientific research analysis and evaluation reports for different groups, and provide relevant information for the formulation and deployment of scientific research strategies of the unit.

ORCID started as a project jointly initiated by Thomson Reuters and Nature Publishing Group in 2009. Its meaning is the same as DOI (Digital Object Identifier) in the field of scientific literature. ORCID is an academic ID card for scientific researchers, one ID for each person. Once you have an ORCID number, you can be tracked no matter where you are, what job you change, or if you change your mailbox. Currently, ORCID is still in its infancy and deserves the attention it deserves. It can be said that the emergence of ORCID can greatly avoid the occurrence of academic misconduct. Because ORCID registration is simple, does not require any fees, and has many benefits, it is recommended that Chinese scientists register and apply for a personal ORCID number as soon as possible.
