AlmaLinux 9 has been released , codenamed "Emerald Puma".
AlmaLinux is an open source, community-driven project compiled from the source code of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). AlmaLinux is fully binary compatible with RHEL 8, built by the creators of CloudLinux OS. The AlmaLinux team promises to provide the AlmaLinux operating system for free forever, and the project will be permanently open source without any restrictions or charges, and will be supported until 2029.
AlmaLinux 9.0 is based on upstream kernel version 5.14 and includes enhancements around cloud and container development, as well as improvements to the web console. This release also enhances security and compliance, including additional security profiles, greatly improved SELinux performance, and user authentication logging.
Various other updates include Python 3.9, GCC 11, and the latest versions of the LLVM, Rust, and Go compilers. Additionally, this release comes with some new wallpapers:
AlmaLinux 9 supports the following 4 architectures, which are fully equivalent to upstream:
- Intel/AMD (x86_64)
- ARM64 (aarch64)
- IBM PowerPC (ppc64le)
- IBM Z (s390x)
