About English abbreviations

Like Chinese abbreviations, there are various abbreviations in English, mostly acronyms for phrases.

(1) Latin abbreviations
are often encountered in English reading and writing, such as:
  • etc. = Abbreviation for etcetera. and so on "Wait..."
  • ie = Latin abbreviation for id est. in other words "that is, in other words, that is to say"
  • eg = Abbreviation for Latin exempli gratia. for example "for example"

(2) Abbreviations in professional fields
There are many abbreviations for computer proper nouns, such as:
  • IT: Information Technology, Information Technology
  • URL : Uniform Resource Locations, Uniform Resource Locator

There are also many fields for e-commerce and information management, such as:
  • PRD: Product Requirements Document, product requirements document
  • MRD: Market Requirements Document, market requirements document

Of course there are many other fields of abbreviations.

(3) Abbreviations for network terms
SMS, email, IM, blog, social media SNS, etc. are widely used.

(4) Special 2 and 4
2 = To / Too / Two For example:
  • int2char: int to char
  • string2int: string to int

4 = For / Four For example:
  • Log4j: logging for Java
  • Dom4j: XML DOM parser framework for Java
