Report: DevOps adoption rate has almost doubled in five years, the highest in history

A newly released report from RedGate Software shows that nearly three-quarters of organizations have adopted DevOps in some form. At the same time, the use of cross-platform databases has also increased significantly. The report is based on a survey of 3,200 companies worldwide, covering developers, DBAs, software delivery professionals, and IT leaders.

The report pointed out that the adoption rate of DevOps has reached the highest ever. Approximately 74% of the respondents are adopting DevOps for development; when the report was first published five years ago, this data accounted for only 47%. Another 26% of respondents said that they use DevOps in all projects. In 2017, this figure was 18%. According to the report, large companies are more likely to adopt DevOps than small companies.

In addition, only 30% of organizations are using a database platform now, compared to 38% a year ago. 26% of people have two databases, and nearly half of the respondents said they are using three or more databases.

Another obvious development is the increase in the shift to cloud computing, which reversed the small decline seen in last year's report. Fifty-eight percent of the respondents revealed that they have used the cloud completely or in combination with it. In 2020, this figure accounted for 46%, and in 2019 it was 51%. Only one in five respondents said that they still only host databases locally.

The report also pointed out that despite the increase in remote work affected by the epidemic, the IT team still maintains significant productivity. Forty-three percent of companies indicated that their organization's growth was higher or in line with expectations, 13% of companies had neither growth nor decline, and only 9% of companies experienced a decline. In terms of productivity and performance, 80% of respondents said that remote work will exist for a long time, and 63% said that remote work will increase their productivity. Only 13% of companies reported a negative impact.

In this regard, Redgate Chief Product Officer Jakub Lamik said that the remote and remote collaboration method helps to deepen everyone's understanding of the way IT teams work together and continue to develop applications and databases. In turn, it has further accelerated the growth of DevOps, the use of multiple database platforms for different use cases, and the pace of migration to the cloud. And there is a clear correlation between the adoption of DevOps and the performance of software delivery. High performers can release application and database changes faster and more frequently, with fewer errors.

According to Lamik, the rise of DevOps in application and database development has helped alleviate many of the challenges that organizations face in the course of digital transformation. It enables IT teams to remain productive even when working remotely, and encourages them to explore new database platforms, whether internally or in the cloud.

According to Redgate's prediction, the biggest challenge in 2021 will be to manage the diversity of systems between different teams, while increasing maturity based on past successes.
