Kuma 1.0 GA has been released and contains more than 70 new features and improvements. Kuma is a modern general service mesh control plane, based on Envoy, which is a powerful proxy software designed for cloud native applications.
Kuma’s efficient data plane and advanced control plane greatly reduce the difficulty of use by teams. It can run on any platform including Kubernetes, virtual machines, containers, bare metal and traditional environments to implement the cloud in the entire organization Native experience.
The main updates of this version include:
Multi-region
- Automatically generate "region" resources, simplifying multi-region deployment.
- Locally-aware load balancing can reduce multi-region delays and reduce export costs.
- The ingress data plane proxy is automatically synchronized to the global CP through the new "Ingress" DP type.
Services & Policies
- Added support for explicit external services.
- Added support for the new "service" resource, which groups each "kuma.io/service" into multiple data plane agents.
- Added support for Kafka protocol.
- The configurable pass-through control function in the "grid" resource.
performance
- In the mission-critical SLA-enforced enterprise environment, actual production tests were conducted.
- When running thousands of services in Kuma, the overall performance has improved significantly (~5 times).
- The internal cache of resources is improved to better support high data plane agent load.
- When running with a large amount of resources, the overall scalability of CLI and GUI is improved.
Safety
- Ensure the data plane and the control plane proxy and lock the new flow of communication between them.
- A new process for starting data plane agents and connecting them to the control plane, which works better in a non-K8s containerized environment.
- Added support for Kubernetes probes.
- Improved the readiness check of the Sidecar agent in Kubernetes.

- Kuma 1.0 New GUI.
- More than 30 new charts have been added out of the box in Grafana to capture the behavior of CP on a scale. Kuma now provides more than 65 charts.
- Added support for AWS ECS and Fargate deployment.
- Upgrade to the latest Envoy 1.16.0.
