The open source industrial Internet of Things database Apache IoTDB graduated as a top Apache project!

The world's largest open source software foundation, the Apache Software Foundation, announced on September 23, 2020 Beijing time that Apache IoTDB has graduated as a top Apache project!

Apache IoTDB is an open source Internet of Things native database designed to meet the stringent requirements of large-scale Internet of Things and Industrial Internet of Things (IoT and IIoT) applications for data, storage, and analysis. The project was first developed by the big data system software team of Tsinghua University and was donated to Apache on November 18, 2018. It was received by four project mentors Christofer Dutz, Justin Mclean, Kevin A. McGrail, Willem Ning Jiang (姜宁) Guidance and management by members of the Project Management Committee of the Incubator (PPMC).

During the one-year and 10-month incubation process, 78 contributors from around the world have been gathered. The mailing list received 5124 emails from 251 members. Jira CCP created 905 Issues, merged 1413 PRs, and released 9 One version, with 17 votes in favor of a one-time vote through the community graduation proposal.

On September 16, 2020, Apache IoTDB was officially promoted to a top-level project after a vote by the Apache board of directors. Official graduation statement: https://s.apache.org/3xv3c

IoTDB, as a high-performance and lightweight open source Internet of Things native database, has become an important member of the Apache big data ecosystem. It focuses on the Industrial Internet of Things, with low storage costs and high-speed data writing (tens of millions of data points per second writing, efficient out-of-order data Processing), fast query (second-level query of TB-level data), complete functions (data addition, deletion, modification, and rich aggregation functions), integrated query and analysis (one piece of data to meet real-time query and analysis and mining), edge-cloud collaboration, Simple and easy to use (using standard JDBC interface, SQL-like query language) and other features. Benchmark tests show that the read and write performance of IoTDB is better than the existing time series databases InfluxDB, TimescaleDB, OpenTSDB, KairosDB, etc.

Apache IoTDB has been used in dozens of organizations, including ArcelorMittal, Oriental Guoxin, China Meteorological Administration, Hunan China Tobacco, Datang Xianyi, Goldwind, Haier, Lenovo, Four-dimensional Zhilian, Shanghai Metro , YOFC and so on.

Professor Wang Jianmin , Dean of the School of Software of Tsinghua University, the head of the big data system software team, and the initiator of the IoTDB project, said: "The Apache IoTDB open source project is our team’s software technology innovation and leading talent training for the needs of smart IoT big data applications. A beneficial attempt is a long way to go, and the future can be expected."

"IoTDB Apache has become a top-level project at the right time ," said C. Mohan , an academician of the National Academy of Engineering and Chief Scientist of IBM India . "I am very excited. This is the first open source project initiated by a Chinese university. I have been working with IoTDB. The researchers worked closely together to witness the maturity of this project and the formation of a vibrant open source software community. I look forward to working with relevant researchers in the community to promote the project to a very promising future."

“Apache IoTDB is a project initiated by Chinese universities and successfully incubated in the Apache community,” said Professor Mei Hong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, when hearing the news of the project’s graduation: “It follows the Apache Way to establish a healthy and active international open source community. The successful practice of open source education and cultural construction in China."

"Apache IoTDB is optimized for different operating environments, operating systems, and workloads on the edge and cloud sides, and has innovated data storage and query analysis technology. It is the core basic software of the Industrial Internet of Things," said Professor Liao Xiangke , academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering . "In addition Through the open source model, Apache IoTDB brings these innovative technologies to the world."

"Apache IoTDB is very suitable for edge computing scenarios," said Dr. Julian Fein auer, CEO of Practical industries GmbH in Germany . "The high compression ratio is a performance indicator that allows the system to be used efficiently even when storage is limited. IoTDB is very suitable Application scenarios in the industrial Internet of Things environment."

"We tried and tested various solutions, and finally chose IoTDB as our core database. It has high performance and is open to enterprises," said Dawei Liu , the architect of AutoAI Inc. , "This project deeply attracted me to join. Community and become one of the maintainers of IoTDB."

Dr. Huang Xiangdong, assistant researcher at the School of Software of Tsinghua University and VP of the Apache IoTDB project, said: " Apache IoTDB is becoming a standard solution for IoT data management and analysis . Welcome more users and developers to join the IoTDB open source community!

The Apache IoTDB open source project is a useful attempt by our team to carry out software technology innovation and leading talent training for intelligent IoT big data applications. It has a long way to go. It can be expected to pass the graduation vote with 17 votes in Apache incubator in the future. The Apache IoTDB open source project is "The Internet of Things, especially the Industrial Internet of Things, has swept the world, and the amount of Internet of Things data is unimaginable. The unique characteristics of Internet of Things data make it possible to implement the Internet of Things based on key-value databases or relational databases. Data management is becoming more and more difficult." Dr. Huang Xiangdong, assistant researcher at the School of Software of Tsinghua University and vice president of the Apache IoTDB project, said: "Apache IoTDB is the missing link between current IoT data and IoT applications. We are proud that IoTDB It is helping to redefine how to manage IoT data on the edge and on the cloud. Graduating as a top Apache project is an important milestone in the maturity of the project. "Ah ah" The Internet of Things, especially industrial things sweeping the world, has a huge amount of data on the Internet of Things. It’s hard to imagine.
