【Technology015】Product Design: Principles

This article will discuss the process of product design.
It can be divided into 3 modules.

Module1-Define challenge

  1. Expert interviews
  2. Setting the long-term goals and sprint questions
  3. Creation of map and target

Expert interviews. It means letting experts speak about the problems within their team and the experts are simply someone chosen on the sprint team to be the person who wants to talk about the problems while the rest of the team writes notes about the problem.

Setting the long-term goals and sprint questions. Team members are going to take a rectangular post it on a sharpie and they’re going to write about their aspects what their product looks like two years from now in the most optimistic way possible.

Creation of map and target. The map is essentially a user journey showing the entire system of your product, or the specific journey that you think you want to focus on.

Module2-Design solutions

  1. Lighting demos
  2. Four-part sketching

Lighting demos. It’s a relatively simple exercise, where team members will search for inspiration from other products or services that have solved similar problems to what they’re having right now.

Four-part sketching. It’s that the team members are going to start turning some of these nots or turning some of these small ideas into something a little bit more tangible.

Module3-Decide solutions

  1. Heatmap voting
  2. Presentation of concepts
  3. Straw poll
  4. Decider voting

Heatmap voting. Every team member is given a little block of voting dots and their task for the next 20 minutes is to remind themselves of the long-term goal, remind themselves of the sprint question, remind themselves of the map and target, and then walk from concept to concept, read them calmly, and use those dots to vote on the ideas or pieces of ideas they find interesting and they think could be good solutions to the challenges presented.

Presentation of concepts. This is where the moderator goes from concept to concept and present what their interpretation of what they’re essentially reading back to the room.

Straw poll. Every member of the team besides the decider will now get a large dot, where they will write their initials on.

Decider voting. This is where the decider needs to make a final decision about, which direction the team is going to go, and how this is going to work is that the decider is going to be given two dots with little stars on them, and they’re going to use these dots to vote on the two dots on one solution, if they want to say one solution that they really think should go forward, or two separate solutions, or one whole solution and a little bit of another solution.
