Each week about fifty New Yorker cartoonists submit ten ideas, yielding five hundred cartoons for no more than twenty spots in the magazine. Arguably the most brilliant single-panel-gag cartoonists in the world create a bunch of cartoons every week that never see the light of day.

These rejects were piling up in the dusty corners of studios all over the country. Sam Gross, who has been contributing since 1962, has more than 12,000 rejected cartoons. (Seriously. He's been numbering every single cartoon he's ever submitted to The New Yorker since the very beginning.) Enter editor Matthew Diffee. He tapped his fellow cartoonists, asking them to rescue these hilarious lost gems. From the artists' stacks of all-time favorite rejects, Diffee handpicked the standouts -- the cream of the crap -- and created The Rejection Collection, a place where good ideas go when they die. Too risqué, silly, or weird for The New Yorker, the cartoons in this book offer something no other collection has: They have never been seen in print until now.

With a foreword by New Yorker cartoon editor Robert Mankoff that explains the sound judgment, respectability, and scruples not found anywhere in these pages,

评论(Reviews)

This book is a collection of the best rejected cartoons from the New Yorker magazine. Ho determined what was the best of the worst? The editor of the book, of course. And, having read the book, I must say the editor did a good job at choosing funny, yet irreverent cartoons. I found laughter to be common while reading the book, although I am sure that you will not find every cartoon to be funny. That is the nature of this type of book.

In addition to the cartoons, each section is headed by a questionnaire that was sent to each cartoonist. Those alone are worth the price of the book, as they give you an interesting look into the minds that are creating these types of cartoons.

Printed on high quality paper, and bound nicely, this book is a definite keeper for the library. If you love cartoons, particularly the single box style, you will love this book. Enjoy!

I never considered myself a fan of the New Yorker or the cartoons. I found this book in a coffee shop and I found it very funny. The cartoons lean towards the subversive and potentially offensive which is my kind of humor. I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend who also loved it

If a book makes me laugh out loud - at least once, then I rate it "I like it" = 4 stars. This book made me laugh out loud - once.

There are some amusing cartoons for sure but for the most part its easy to see why they were rejected. Save your hard earned money for the second edition of The Rejection Collection which appears to have been compiled with more care and thought towards enducing laughter. The 2nd edition made me laugh outloud several times!

The format for the work of each cartoonist is a standard two-page questionnaire followed by five of his/her cartoons. I thought most of the cartoons were funny, more so than those in other cartoon collections, and generally inoffensive.

There are some familiar faces here (e.g., Sam Gross and Gahan Wilson), but most of the cartoonists were new to me. There are none of those god-awful smug suburbanite cartoons that actually appear in the New Yawker.

Unlike one other reviewer (D. Low), I found the answers to the questionnaires to be fascinating. Many were highly original, and provided insight into how the creative mind works.

These are laugh-out-loud funny cartoons.

When are they going to publish a THIRD volume??

I would buy all they can publish.

There is just no limit to the cartoons the New Yorker rejects, yet so many are so good. They don't have room to print very many, so you have to find the rejects here.

It's hard to pin down a favorite, but the one with Death had me choking I was laughing so hard.

A funny and great book! Sent to my 80 yr old mom for Mother's Day. She liked it but she can handle dark humor. This was the second copy that I have purchased.

These cartoons are much funnier than the ones which actually appear in the New Yorker. I usually laugh out loud two or three times per issue, but almost every cartoon in this book was a winner! Most of these cartoons were rejected not because of poor quality, but because they're in, ahem, questionable taste. The little questionnaires (full of sly wit) which each cartoonist answers were annoying at first, but ended up being one of my favorite parts of the book (partly because they stopped me from barreling through the cartoons and getting overloaded). A perfect gift for somebody who isn't easily offended!

Okay, the New Yorker calls them "idea drawings." If you'd like to see the dark and irreverent side of those whose work populates so many pages of this venerable magazine, buy this volume.

I love NY'er cartoons. These aren't rejects--these were too outre, too funny, too rude, smart, outrageous, on point... Just be careful to read these on or near well-upholstered surfaces. You'll hurt yourself laughing so much collapsed on a hard wood floor.

Highly irreverent, funny, inappropriate, offensive, tasteless, callous, shallow, mean-spirited, insensitive, hilarious...and worth an immediate purchase by anyone seeking a laugh.

is how editor Matthew Diffee describes the standouts handpicked from stacks of rejected cartoons by The New Yorker. The Rejection Collection is "a place where good ideas go when they die": those cartoons that were too risque, silly or weird for TNY -- but this compilation will be just right for those with slightly-warped-not-easily-offended senses of humor. This book is made even more enjoyable by the "questionnaires" each cartoonist submitted with her/his "all-time favorite rejects." I hope a second volume is on the way soon.

A treasure to behold, but when it arrived, its spine was broken and pages were spilling out. Good thing I own my own Methyl Cellulose and know how to use it to re-bind a book. Jeez....

Read, the unpublishable, out of the box cartoons with analysis. Beyond the usual bounds of taste and context demanded by the New Yorker. Perfect gift for a New Yorker cartoon lover.

This is a treasure. I laughed out loud and I tried to figure out why they were rejects but mostly, deep down I knew why. I am sure they were on the edge and tipping toward reject. I got the last collection of rejects also and feel the same way about that one. If I had not read that one, then I would never have gotten this one. Isn't it great to know it will be good and it is great!!! I bought it without reading one single review and my review is 5 star. I ate it up and showed it to others and recommended it.

Fast delivery and the book was in excellent condition. I've enjoyed reading it, and I am thinking of buying more from the collection. Thank you.

One of the funniest books I've read. I appreciate the insight it gives into the creativity of each artist. I have shared this collection with many friends.
