ISYS2120 Assignment 2 (sem1, 2018)
Due: Tuesday 2 October, 11pm
Value: 10%
This assignment is done in groups of up to 4 students (aim for exactly 4
members, but it may happen that sometimes a group is smaller, eg if there are
not enough students in a lab). We recommend that all students in a group be
attending the same lab session, so you can work together more easily. Note: it is
a strict1 rule, that every student must have at least two people in their group,
who were not in the same group with them in assignment 1.
Procedure: In week 6 lab, you should form a group. If necessary, the tutor may
rearrange group membership. One person in the group should go to the “People”
page of the unit’s Canvas site, and then on the “Groups” tab of that page, pick an
empty group for asst1, and join it. The “leader” can inform the others of the
group name, and the other members can then use this page and join the same
group.
If, during the course of the assignment work, there is a dispute among group
members that you can’t resolve, or that will impact your group’s capacity to
complete the task well, you need to inform the unit coordinator,
[email protected]. Make sure that your email names the group, and is
explicit about the difficulty; also make sure this email is copied to all the
members of the group. We need to know about problems in time to help fix them,
so set early deadlines for group members, and deal with non-performance
promptly (don’t wait till a few days before the work is due, to complain that
someone is not doing their share). If necessary, the coordinator will split a group,
and leave anyone who doesn’t participate effectively in a group by themself.
How to submit your work: produce a PDF file, containing the extended ER
diagram for your conceptual design. We suggest that you have an overview
diagram, that shows the entity and relationship information, but not the
attributes, and then give separate diagrams for each entity or relationship with
its attributes (like the diagram in Asst1 inbstructions). This file should be
submitted by only one member of the group, through the Canvas assignment link.
1 We will actually make an exception, for the case where a group has only 1 or 2
members; however, these exceptions must be approved by the unit coordinator.
The task:
Produce an extended ER diagram, that captures a conceptual design for the
information that needs to be kept in a system that manages student workplacements.

Partner organizations register with the university: each partner has name,
address, ABN, textual description of the industry it is part of, contact information
(name and email) for their student recruitment team lead, and a URL for more
information. A partner makes available placement opportunities, which have a
name, a text description of the type of work, list of degrees from which students
would be chosen for the opportunity, the dates between which the role is
available, the minimum number of hours of work a student must do each week,
in the role, and a limit on how many students can be accepted for this placement
opportunity. Some opportunities come with a salary, while others are only suited
for students who are willing to work without pay.
Students are also users of the system. Each student is required to indicate their
SID, name, and email, as well as their degree, their WAM and the year in which
they expect to graduate; as well, each student should express interest in some of
the available placement opportunities. If a student is interested in a particular
opportunity, they should say the earliest date on which they could start, and the
last date by which they must be finished.
The University provides information about the different degrees, including name,
duration and also contact information for the degree advisor. The system then
makes matches between students and opportunities (of course, no student will
be matched to an opportunity, unless they had earlier expressed interest in that
role); determining the start and end dates for the placement, and also the
number of hours the student will do each week in that role. When a student is
allocated to a placement opportunity, an academic supervisor and a partner--
based supervisor is also assigned for this placement; different students may have
different supervisors, even if they are all allocated to a given opportunity.
