Game Art Techniques and Arts

Hello everyone, my name is A Zhao.
Many friends may know that when I first entered the game industry, I did art work, including modeling, texturing, animation, etc. I am also very familiar with the production of various art resources and know many production techniques. But in the end, I did not continue to work in art, but changed my career to become a programmer. Why is this?
For example, if you give me a fully designed original painting, I can use it to create a 3D model with good effects, high degree of restoration, reasonable wiring, and a small number of faces. For this step, it can be said that my technique is good. But without a well-designed original painting, no matter how skilled I am, it will be difficult to create a beautiful and distinctive 3D model.
Obviously, what I had were technical skills, but I didn't have creative abilities. In other words, I am just a mechanic, not an artist.
In every position in art, I personally believe that artistic creativity is required. For example, in the current UI work in the game industry, many UI artists who work on game interfaces may only separate layers according to the original painting to produce pictures, and may work on the interface in the engine, but as for how good-looking an interface is, how many fonts should be used? , in fact, there is no idea at all how many colors to match. If they continue to work under this situation, what height can they reach? Are you very skilled in using Photoshop? Is it fast to use Unity to create interfaces? Or what?
In the year 2023 that has just passed, there is a topic about art that is expected to go down in history, that is, AI drawing has caused many companies to lay off original painting artists. Why does this happen? AI drawing is very fast, but in fact, AI can not do as many things as imagined. It only analyzes and combines existing resources, and then generates new pictures. These new pictures will not produce a new picture. A new style will not produce some new ideas. But why can AI still replace so many original painters’ jobs? Obviously, most junior original painters also find various materials from the Internet and then stitch them together. Their work content is not much different from that of AI, but they are far from being as fast as AI. I don’t think it’s inconceivable that art workers who only have technology but no artistic creativity would be replaced by AI.
So, as long as you have art, you can work well as a game artist without knowing anything about technology? The difference between game art and art in other industries is obvious. For example, whether it is a movie or a poster, what you see is what you get. As long as the picture of the movie looks correct, as long as the poster is printed without errors. , that’s it. But game art is different. Games require the use of various technologies to display the required parts of the screen. No matter which technology or engine is used in the game, certain rules need to be followed in order to correctly express the art resources. For example, game special effects can be implemented in many ways, including particle special effects, sequence frame animation, vertex animation, UV animation, etc. Different technical means can achieve different effects. If the game art designer only understands art and does not understand any technology, it is difficult for him to know how much of the effect he designed can be expressed through the game engine? If the designer can understand certain technical means, he can express his design through the game engine 100%.
I am a low-level artist who only understands technology, so it is obvious that my future development prospects in art will not be very good, so I can only develop more technically.
