Chrome tests restricting cross-site tracking to phase out third-party cookies

Google Chrome is testing Tracking Protection, a new feature that limitscross-site tracking.

This new feature is part of Google's"Privacy Sandbox" The phaseout of third-party cookies in the second half of the year will include creating new tools for websites to implement basic functionality and giving developers time to adapt.

The introduction of Tracking Protection  will first start with a small group of Chrome users, the announcement revealed, they will begin on January 4, 2024 Test Tracking Protection feature, rolled out to 1% of global Chrome browser users.

Third-party cookies have been a fundamental part of the web for nearly three decades. They can be used to track website activity, but websites also use them to support a range of online experiences, such as helping users log in or showing relevant advertising.

"With Privacy Sandbox, we're taking a responsible approach to phasing out third-party cookies in Chrome. We're building new tools for websites, supporting key use cases, and giving developers transition time. We're starting from a small group of Chrome users Start introducing Tracking Protection so developers can test their readiness for a web without third-party cookies."

Users who participate in the Tracking Protection feature trial will be randomly selected. Selected users will receive notifications whenopen Chrome browser. When this feature is enabled, third-party cookies will be restricted by default as users browse the web, limiting the ability to be tracked across different websites.

If a website fails to run without third-party cookies, and Chrome detects that the user is experiencing the problem (such as multiple page refreshes), the eye icon on the right side of the address bar will prompt the user to temporarily Re-enable third-party cookies for this website.

Previously, Google has released a series of Privacy Sandbox updates. For example, in August, Project Flight was launched, which consists of a series of sample applications that collectively demonstrate the Privacy Sandbox API in action in real user experiences.
