Preface

On December 10th, I was fortunate to be invited to participate in the GitHub Universe 2023 Watch Party in Shanghai – Open Source Developer Day.

This event was held offline at Microsoft Reactor in Shanghai, where digital AI and open source experts gathered together to chat about the open source journey with open source enthusiasts.

activity description

Throughout the offline conference, we stepped into the GitHub cloud environment and deployed and developed mini-games on the spot. In the exciting practical demonstration, we learned in depth how to add unit testing, application interfaces and other functions to small games, and experienced the power of GitHub Copilot's latest features throughout the process.

Gains from attending the conference

What particularly impressed me was Tw93’s sharing of “The Impact of the Open Source Spirit on My Team”. He shared many inspiring views.

First, he emphasized a key aspect of recruiting: hiring the right people. Identify potential talent through projects, which gives the team a more comprehensive understanding of each member. During the community recruitment process, we successfully attracted many outstanding students, injecting fresh blood into the diversified development of the team.

Secondly, the pursuit of diversity has become a core value of the team. He emphasized not pursuing a cookie-cutter personnel style, encouraging each member to maintain his or her own characteristics, and believed that working with people from different backgrounds can inspire more innovation and inspiration.

In terms of talking about "geeks and innovation", we advocate not being limited by job responsibilities and encourage team members to challenge and solve problems that others cannot solve. He encourages the continuous introduction of community trend technologies to promote continuous progress of the team.

Finally, the focus of sharing was on the "spirit of open source". He listed a series of team practices, such as learning community norms, transparency and openness, relaxed atmosphere, continuous learning, etc.

In terms of learning community specifications, the team maintains community RFC specifications through technical solution design documents and adopts more asynchronous workflow methods to make the project process smoother.

Transparency and openness are the culture of the team. No confidential documents, OKRs, and code repositories are open to all members. More open discussion, collaboration, and decision-making provide each team member with more opportunities to participate in project decision-making.

The relaxed atmosphere is the unique temperament of the team. They abandoned the concepts of superiors, subordinates and bosses, established a partnership to write code together, and created a pleasant working environment.

In terms of learning, the team conducts bi-weekly technology sharing sessions, covering various fields such as AIGC, products, and financial management. The weekly trend magazine provides team members with continuous learning opportunities.

Summarize

Overall, this GitHub Universe 2023 Watch Party in Shanghai brought me a new perspective on open source. Through the actual operation of small games and in-depth exchanges with industry leaders, I deeply feel the powerful driving force of the open source spirit. The Tw93 team’s sharing made me appreciate the importance of team culture and inspired me to further my enthusiasm on the open source road. This event is not only a technology feast, but also an open source management
