Zulip is an open source team collaboration tool, a modern team chat application designed for real-time and asynchronous conversations, supporting fast search, drag-and-drop file upload, image preview, group private messaging, audible notifications, missed email message reminders with desktop applications, etc.
Zulip Server 8.0 is nowreleased with hundreds of new features and bug fixes. Some updates include:
- The new inbox view displays all unread messages in a convenient browsing experience similar to your phone's home screen. It is an option in the user's home view.
- Added support for following topics, allowing you to configure notification settings for followed topics, and provide flexible configuration options to automatically notify you when you send a message or otherwise interact with a topic, or when you are mentioned Follow the topic. Added
Shift + Nshortcut key to navigate to the next unread topic of interest.
- Added support for restricting guest access to user lists.
- The new @topic mentions feature allows you to mention only users who participated in the topic by sending messages or emoji reactions.
- Typing notifications now support user flows of 100 or less.
- Clicking on a message in the search view will now jump directly to the target message instead of starting a reply, as it is rare to reply without full context.
- The left sidebar now allows users to collapse the global view to make more room for information flow and conversations.
- A new unread count display style setting has been added to control which streams display an unread numeric count or a simple dotted unread indicator. A numeric count is displayed by default in normal data streams, but a dotted indicator is displayed in silent data streams.
- Added support for creating voice calls.
- Significant visual design improvements to the feed, search area/navigation bar, and left sidebar. Replaced the gear menu with three new redesigned menus: the help menu, the profile/avatar menu, and the more focused gear menu.
- Added thumbnail and lightbox player support for video links and video files uploaded directly to Zulip. Previously, Zulip only supported videos hosted by third-party platforms that offer embedded players, such as YouTube and Vimeo.
- The compose area has been redesigned, adding new formatting buttons for most email formatting functions, including polls. Improved functionality for pasting a URL after selecting text. If the Personal Pronouns custom profile field is configured, the Topic Type header now shows if a new topic is created, and the User Type header now shows Personal Pronouns.
Additionally, Zulip announced new business and community plans for self-hosted customers. Effective immediately, new self-hosted customers will no longer receive unlimited free access to Zulip’s mobile push notification service. Organizations with more than 10 users need to sign up for a plan to use the service. For existing users of the service, unlimited free access will end on February 15, 2024.
