The programming website Programiz recently released a survey report aimed at revealing the impact of ChatGPT on the field of programming education and involving the impact of ChatGPT on careers. It is worth noting that this investigation was conducted before the release of GPT-4.
The report is based on insights from more than 10,000 respondents from more than 50 countries, who expressed their views on how ChatGPT is rewriting their learning experiences, reshaping career paths, and influencing their vision of the future world of AI. 58% of the respondents were students, and more than half had less than one year of programming experience.
Some highlights include:
- 67% of respondents reported using ChatGPT as a primary source or as an aid to learning programming, with the majority using it to understand programming concepts. 72% of people use ChatGPT multiple times a week to learn programming.
- Understanding programming concepts, debugging/improving code, and understanding other people's code are the three main uses of ChatGPT in the process of learning to program.
- 77% of respondents believe ChatGPT has improved their programming learning experience. Only 6% of respondents said ChatGPT's answers did not accurately meet their learning needs.
- Irrelevant and inconsistent responses (54%) are the main challenges faced when learning programming using ChatGPT. 40% of respondents said that overreliance on ChatGPT could hinder critical thinking and problem-solving skills; and 19% were very concerned about the loss of human interaction and personalized guidance.
- 30% of people think ChatGPT is better than university lectures, and more than 38% prefer ChatGPT to Google.
- Nearly 75% of respondents are upskilling or plan to upskill in preparation for ChatGPT’s impact on the job market.
- 34% of respondents have experienced some change in their work as a result of ChatGPT.
- 61% of respondents are optimistic about ChatGPT's potential to create new jobs in the tech sector, and 51% believe web development is most vulnerable to job losses caused by ChatGPT.
- 17% of the respondents believe that ChatGPT will completely replace traditional teaching methods, and 84% believe that educational institutions should adjust their programming courses for ChatGPT.
The report states that if used effectively, ChatGPT has the ability to significantly change the field of programming education. Embracing this technology now has the potential to not only advance careers, but also allow individuals to stay ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving environment.
