FreeBSD 14.0-RC1

The first RC of FreeBSD 14.0 has been released . This is the project's first major version update since the release of 13.0 in April 2021.

FreeBSD 14.0 is scheduled to be officially released on November 7, 2023, supporting amd64, i386, powerpc, powerpc64, powerpc64le, powerpcspe, armv7, aarch64 and riscv64 architectures.

A summary of changes since 14.0-BETA5 includes:

  • Race condition in swap_pager_swapoff_object() has been fixed
  • Various updates to Linux KPIs, 802.11, iwlwifi and rtw88
  • Other miscellaneous fixes

Some user configuration changes in FreeBSD 14.0 include:

  • The default shell for the root user is now sh(1), which now has many features for interactive use
  • The default mail transfer agent uses Dragonfly Mail Agent (dma(8)), which replaces sendmail(8)
  • The mta_start_script configuration variable and othermta startup script in rc.conf(5) have been retired
  • The one-time password tool OPIE opie(4) has been removed from the base system
