In 2023, I wish you good habits!

Why should you develop a good habit?

Many things take time to work out. Learning new technologies and changing to new jobs require you to learn a lot of new knowledge. If it is the kind that has a clear answer, we can also learn it quickly by learning from experts. The problem is that most of the problems we face are the kind that do not have a clear answer, or in other words, the clear answer needs to be given by ourselves. of. This requires the ability to continue learning.

Last year I summarized the books I read and the lessons I learned. These two points have basically not fallen behind this year. Compared with last year, they should have exceeded them. Of course, the quantity is not important, the important thing is the harvest. Many times, you don’t know what you have gained as you move forward, but when you really use it, these gains will come out. This is also the charm of continuous learning. To be able to do this, I can sum it up in two words: "habit".

If you have to rely on perseverance to do things, I guess it will be difficult. But if you rely on habit to stick to a behavior, it's actually easy. Just like you brush your teeth when you get up every day, and eat every meal when it's time, you never think about doing these things consistently, but it becomes unconscious behavior.

How to develop a good habit?

A journey of thousands of miles begins with a single step, and good habits start with a small first step.

No matter what the goal you want to achieve, our first step is to dismantle the goal. Just like dismantling the work task, dismantle it into the smallest action unit, and then let yourself do it in a fixed scenario .

For example, I want to complete the goal of 2 hours of audio learning every day. 2 hours, non-working hours. So is the commute time enough? Assuming that the commute time is 1 hour, if I can listen at 2x speed, then this habit of listening to audio during my commute can achieve my learning goals.

After dismantling it, it’s time to take action. But this time it shouldn’t be about how much time it takes to complete, but about fixing your current actions. When you go out in the morning, put on your headphones, turn on the audio, and start playing. Start listening at 1.25 times the speed of sound. If you feel that you are not gaining much knowledge at the beginning. Then prepare to have less audio and listen to it repeatedly. The same goes for getting off work. Just keep wearing your headphones and keep playing the audio for studying. It only takes one week for this habit to be initially formed, and within 21 days, the behavior will be completely fixed as a habit.

After you develop the habit of listening, let’s develop your concentration. What exactly do you listen to every day? You can hear very little knowledge at first because you don't have enough concentration. But as long as you keep listening, you will slowly hear more and more. This time can be long or short. In this process, you can slowly increase the audio multiple, 1.5 times, 1.75 times. Slowly, most people can hear 2 times clearly. What is tested here is not hearing sensitivity, but concentration. My own experience is that concentration can also be trained.

I can attend dozens of courses a year, and my habit of listening to audio during my commute to and from get off work plays a major role.

How to break a bad habit

It is actually very difficult to get rid of a bad habit. Better yet, develop a new good habit to override the bad one. Only magic can defeat magic.

For example, I used to have a two-hour lunch break at noon. In addition to eating, I actually had one and a half hours of free time. I left 30 minutes for a nap, which was still an hour. Because I didn’t know what to do, I developed the bad habit of watching videos or playing games. I habitually turn on the game every time I finish eating. A dozen lasts for more than an hour, and nap time is sometimes taken up. Even if I don’t play games or I use TikTok, it’s the same. The whole person still felt extremely empty. I don’t blame myself. After all, Tencent and Byte have already thoroughly studied us. How can we defeat human nature? So if you want to get rid of this bad habit, the only way is not to start, but if you want not to start, you have to find something for yourself to do, and replace the scenes of playing games and scrolling through Douyin with new scenes.

My own approach is to directly uninstall games such as Douyin and Wangzhe. Even if I want to play, I still have to download them. These are thresholds. Secondly, some of my learning knowledge service apps have a lot of video courses. Usually there is not such a good time period, so the 1 hour at noon is a perfect match. So I spent more than an hour watching videos. When the time comes, I will open Chaos and get the video lessons. Like Chaos' case class, one class basically lasts for more than an hour, and you can make an evaluation after watching it. In this way, I watched hundreds of business case videos in a year.

Precautions

  1. Time is limited, do only what you want to do.

No matter how much you plan, your time is still limited. Therefore, the habits we deliberately cultivate must be things that are particularly important to us.

What is particularly important? It's important to me to create a body of work that speaks to myself, so a lot of my habits are based on personal growth. I also suggest you start with work.

If you come to the company every day and still don’t know what to do, then it means that the habit of getting into work has not been developed well. Normally, each position has its own fixed work content. For example, when I arrive at the company, I will first check the focus of my work for the day, and then start to solve them one by one.

  1. We always like to do easy things to escape hard things.

This is a bad habit that is not easy to detect. I've had this problem before. If there is something that requires you to keep thinking about it, and you may not be able to come up with a good solution after thinking about it. Then I can easily avoid this problem. Since thinking about it for an hour has no effect, then I’ll do something that can see the effect first.

This is wrong. Whether in the workplace or in life, there are very few things we can do in our lives and our time is limited. We must focus our time on the most important things. On the contrary, those simple things that can be done or not done should be resolutely not done. The story suddenly occurred to me:

"Someone asked Buffett how to get things done. Buffett asked him to write down the 25 most important things. Then he picked the 5 most important things.

Oh, I see. You want me to focus on these 5 things and then do the other 20 things when I have time?

Buffett said, I really want you to focus your time and energy on the first five things, but for the other 20 things, I hope you give up completely, and you have to avoid them like the plague. They will occupy your attention without even realizing it. "

There are also many bad thinking habits, which will eventually be reflected in behavior. We need to be more vigilant about such bad habits. For example, some companies are very busy every day, but in fact the value of daily work is not high. Behind this behavior is that everyone is accustomed to using working time to reflect value. Everyone is very cool, but in fact they have no actual value to the company or themselves. I think this bad habit needs to be replaced with a new good habit.
