[Paper and Journal Reading] Windows-based English document translation & reading solution

Motivation: The author is currently in the literature research stage of writing a thesis and needs to extensively read a large number of foreign literature, so I record a set of foreign language literature reading plans here.

Difficulty: For reading foreign language journals, although the general meaning can be understood by reading it directly, the reading efficiency is not high and it is not suitable for use in the extensive research stage. However, there are many ways to translate foreign language journals, and the author is trying to find a way that takes into account both efficiency and aesthetics.

Solution: Win10 system, dual-screen extension; for papers that the campus has purchased corresponding databases and can be read online, such as Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, etc., directly use the  Chrome+Magic or Edge  translation solution; for documents that can only be downloaded as pdf, you can use  CopyTranslator Or NetEase Youdao dictionary  translation solution

Preface

In scientific research study, we often need to read extensively papers and journals in a certain field to understand cutting-edge knowledge and inspire us with scientific research ideas. University databases generally purchase commonly used databases for teachers and students to conduct academic research.

Commonly used databases for Chinese literature include CNKI, Wanfang, etc. The one I use more commonly is CNKI. Chinese literature will also be divided into core journals, EI collections and other levels based on the journals in which it is published. For example, we conduct a database search in CNKI Search for papers related to digital twins:

You can click on a specific journal name to view the journal’s title, impact factor and other information:

Of course, the higher the impact factor, the better. It is worth noting that the impact factors of interdisciplinary journals are generally not comparable.

When Chinese literature does not meet our scientific research needs , we can conduct research on foreign literature . Let’s enter the topic of this article

1 Windows10 dual-screen configuration

Under Windows, using dual screens can improve our productivity to a certain extent. Choose screen extension and arrange the window positions reasonably according to your own preferences to achieve the most comfortable reading effect.

2 Online literature reading plan

2.1 Chrome + Magic

With magic, you can use Google Chrome to translate online documents. The author often uses Web of Science (hereinafter referred to as wos) to conduct foreign literature searches. The journal impact factors in wos can be viewed here:

After clicking on the journal name, the following page will appear:

You can view the impact factors and partitions. There are four areas in total. The most authoritative documents with high academic value are generally in area 1, and so on.

After clicking on the paper name to enter the journal page, click "Full text from publisher" to trace back to the publisher page to view the paper. If your university has a corresponding database, you will directly unlock the permission to view the full text.

With magic, you can easily view the translated full text by right-clicking the mouse and clicking Translate. However, there may be situations where the words do not convey the meaning. After all, it is machine translation.

2.2 Edge

Under Edge, no magic is required, and other operations are the same. Once you reach the specific page of the paper, you can directly right-click to translate. Although it is more convenient, the author prefers Google Chrome because the plug-in is more powerful.

3 pdf literature reading plan

Some documents cannot be read online and can only be downloaded as pdf, or the school does not have its database and can only go to a certain hub. In short, if you get a pdf document, you can use a translator to translate it .

I want to emphasize it! If almost all PDF files copy the text directly, the newline character at the end of each line will also be copied, which makes it very awkward if copied directly to Baidu, Youdao Translation, etc., as follows:

3.1 CopyTranslator

Therefore, you can download the CopyTranslator translator, which can automatically splice line breaks and solve the pain points. It is open source software and is free to use, download it here:

CopyTranslator

After the installation is complete, you can use Baidu engine without magic, and then set up the monitoring clipboard. After selecting the text to be translated, ctrl+c to copy, the translator can directly display the translated content, and you can even set up automatic copying, as long as Select English and translate directly.

Under the resolution of my monitor, the fonts on this page appear slightly smaller, and the software does not support adjustment for the time being, so I opened a word document and adjusted both the Chinese and English fonts to a state that is comfortable for me. After each translation, Just copy the text in the translation software to word (it's a bit troublesome, but it looks comfortable)

The same text, after this operation, I personally feel that it is more comfortable to read. The display on the right side of the screenshot is small because of the small resolution, but the actual effect is not so outrageous.

3.2 NetEase Youdao Dictionary

There is another solution, use NetEase Youdao Dictionary screenshot translation, download it here:

NetEase Youdao Translation - supports text translation, text translation, image translation, audio translation, video translation_Youdao Translation_Official download website Click the screenshot translation button, or directly use the shortcut keys for screenshot translation:

Still the same test object, the results are as follows:

As you can see, it's still good, but there are still small bugs such as the font being a bit small and the occasional font layout being weird.

Finally, I hope you can find a comfortable literature reading solution!
