The computer science and technology major of Harbin Engineering University is a key undergraduate major in Heilongjiang Province. Its starting point can be traced back to the Command and Electronic Computer Department of the Naval Engineering Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Military Engineering College (referred to as "Harbin Military Engineering") established in 1960. These two professional research groups successfully developed my country's first military electronic computer "Type 901 Torpedo Boat Director" and my country's first batch of "441-B series computers" using domestic transistors in 1958 and 1964 respectively. In 1966, the Electronic Computer Department (Sixth Department) of the "Harbin Military Industry" was established based on these two majors. After the reconstruction of "Harbin Military Industry" in 1970, the computer major of Harbin Ship Engineering Institute (referred to as "Harbin Ship Engineering Institute") was established based on some teachers of the computer department of the original "Harbin Military Industry". This major is mainly responsible for undertaking major scientific research projects. Starting from this background, the successfully developed 277 B aircraft and Haiying-II missile commander both won the National Science Conference Award in 1978, and were once in a leading position in the country. In 1975, the Department of Computer and Information Science of "Harbin Shipyard" was established, and successively established the computer and application major and the computer software major. In 1982, the sixth department of "Harbin Shipyard" was renamed from the Department of Computer Science and Technology to the Department of Computer and Information Science.

In 2001 , the School of Computer Science and Technology of Harbin Engineering University was established with the approval of the school.
