Cupertino, California , Apple led by Tim Cook today released a preview version of macOS Sonoma - the latest version of the world's leading desktop operating system, bringing a series of rich features to greatly enhance the Mac experience. Eye-catching screen savers and powerful widgets unlock a whole new set of ways to personalize. Users can now place widgets directly on their desktop and interact with them with just a click; and with the magic of Continuity, they can access the vast ecosystem of iPhone widgets directly from their Mac. With macOS Sonoma, video conferencing has become more interactive, with useful new features to help users deliver remote presentations: such as using speaker overlays to place the presenter directly above the shared content; using Reaction to add cinematic effects gestures to trigger fun video effects. We're rolling out a major update to Safari that will take the web experience to the next level. The User Stories feature groups browsing into multiple topics or projects, and web apps speed up access to your favorite sites. We will also introduce Game Mode, exciting new games, and a new game migration tool suite to help developers easily bring more games to Mac and take the gaming experience to the next level.

Widgets on your Mac are now more powerful and more personal than ever. Users can place widgets directly on their desktop and easily find the tools they know and love by accessing the widget gallery. As users work in the app, widgets blend seamlessly into the wallpaper, allowing users to concentrate on the task at hand. With the magical blessing of Continuity, users can enjoy the vast ecosystem of iPhone widgets (sysin) without leaving their Mac. Widgets have also become interactive, allowing users to perform a variety of operations such as viewing reminders, playing or pausing, and accessing home controls directly on the Mac desktop.

Video conferencing experience is smarter

With the video conferencing enhancements introduced in macOS Sonoma, users can present and share their work more effectively in any video conferencing app. Speaker overlays are a new set of video effects that place users on top of shared content to highlight speakers. In addition, using Reaction, users can also share their feelings by seamlessly adding balloons, confetti, hearts and other elements to videos, or triggering these special effects with gestures (sysin). The improved screen sharing picker simplifies the process of sharing apps during video calls. Users can choose to share the app during a call simply by tapping the green button located in the upper left corner of the app, making it easy to share content directly from the currently open window.

Video conferencing calls become more interactive with new features like speaker overlays and Reaction, all powered by the neural network engine built into Apple silicon.

Safari browser rolls out major update

This year we’re rolling out a major update to Private Browsing, giving you more protection than ever before while browsing, both from blocking trackers and from others who have access to your device. The tracking and fingerprinting protection features in private browsing mode have been further upgraded to help prevent websites from tracking or identifying users. The private browsing window will also be locked when the user is not using it, so users can rest assured that existing tabs are open when they leave the device.

macOS Sonoma introduces a new series of screensavers themed after slow-motion landscape videos from around the world, such as the vast skyline of Hong Kong, the sandstone hills of Monument Valley in Arizona, and the rolling hills of Sonoma County in northern California. This set of graphic and lens-rich images enhances the Mac experience, allowing users to shuttle between themes such as land scenery, earth, underwater or cityscapes (sysin).
