macOS Sonoma makes the Mac experience better than ever—from more ways to personalize settings with widgets, to major updates to Safari and video conferencing, and a host of exciting new games.

Cupertino, Calif. , Apple, led by Tim Cook, today released a preview of macOS Sonoma , the latest version of the world's leading desktop operating system, with a rich set of features that dramatically enhance the Mac experience. Eye-catching screen protection and powerful widgets unlock a whole new way to personalize. Users can now place widgets directly on the desktop to interact with them with just one click; and with the magic of Continuity, they can also access the vast ecosystem of iPhone widgets directly from the Mac. With macOS Sonoma, the interactivity of video conferencing has also improved, and useful new features help users make remote presentations: such as using the speaker overlay to place the presenter directly on top of the shared content; gestures trigger interesting video effects. We're rolling out a major update to the Safari browser that will take the web experience to the next level. The User Scenes feature groups browsing by multiple topics or items, and the Web app speeds up access to favorite sites. We’re also introducing game modes, exciting new games, and a new suite of game migration tools to help developers bring more games to the Mac with ease and take gaming to the next level.

"macOS is at the heart of the Mac, and with Sonoma, we're making macOS an even more beautiful and productive tool," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering. "We believe users will love macOS Sonoma." Love the new way to personalize with widgets, the stunning new screensavers, next-level gaming performance, and productivity gains for video conferencing and the Safari browser experience."

Overview of core functions

Interactive widgets help you get more done

Widgets on your Mac are now more powerful and personal than ever. Users can place widgets directly on the desktop and easily find the tools they know and love by accessing the widget gallery. As users work in the app, widgets blend seamlessly into the wallpaper so users can focus on the task at hand. Thanks to the magic of Continuity, users can enjoy the vast ecosystem (sysin) of iPhone widgets without ever leaving their Mac. Widgets have also become interactive, allowing users to view reminders, play or pause, access home controls, and more, all right from the Mac desktop.

When using the app, widgets blend seamlessly into the desktop wallpaper to help users stay focused.

Smarter video conferencing experience

With video conferencing enhancements introduced in macOS Sonoma, users can present and share their work more effectively in any video conferencing app. Speaker Overlays is a new set of video effects that place users on top of shared content to highlight the speaker. In addition, with React, users can share their feelings (sysin) by seamlessly adding elements such as balloons, confetti, and hearts to videos, or triggering these effects with gestures. An improved screen share picker simplifies the process of sharing apps during video calls. Users can choose to share the app during a call by simply tapping the green button located in the upper left corner of the app, making it easy to share content directly from the currently open window.

With new features like speaker stacking and Reaction, video conferencing calls become more interactive, all thanks to the Neural Engine in Apple silicon.

Major update to Safari browser

A host of new features land in the industry-leading Safari browser, taking Mac users' browsing experience to the next level. This year we're rolling out a major update to Private Browsing that provides even more protection than ever before while browsing, both from trackers and from others with access to your device. Tracking and fingerprinting protection in private browsing mode has been further upgraded to help prevent websites from tracking or identifying users. The private browsing window also locks when the user is not using it, so that users can rest assured that the existing tabs are open when they leave the device.

Additionally, users can use the User Scenes feature to group browsing into topics to keep things organized, while also distinguishing between Cookies, History, Extensions, Tab Groups and Favorites. Users can log into the same website with personal and work accounts at the same time, and switch between the two quickly and smoothly. The Safari browser also supports the creation of web apps that behave like normal apps, bringing users' favorite sites at their fingertips and providing a simplified toolbar for an app-like experience.

With web apps on Mac, users can now create an app-like experience on any website, with the ability to add icons in the Dock and a simplified toolbar to make browsing easier and more convenient.

Brilliant new screen protection

macOS Sonoma introduces a new series of screensavers featuring slow-motion landscape videos from around the world, such as the expansive skyline of Hong Kong, the sandstone hills of Monument Valley, Arizona, USA, and the rolling hills of Sonoma County in northern California. This collection of graphic and camera-inspired images elevates the Mac experience, taking users on a journey (sysin) between subjects such as landscapes, globes, underwater or cityscapes. The login experience has been moved to the bottom of the screen to make more room for the new screen saver. After logging in, the screensaver will seamlessly transition to the desktop.

New Levels of Mac Gaming Experience

Thanks to the blessing of Apple silicon, users can experience unparalleled graphics performance on every Mac. And today, tens of millions of Macs powered by Apple silicon run demanding games with unmatched performance, long battery life and stunning visuals. Game developers continue to innovate with Metal 3, bringing exciting new titles to the Mac, including DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR'S CUT, Stray, Fort Solis, World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, HUMANKIND, Resident Evil Village: Winters' Expansion, The Medium, ELEX II, Firmament, SnowRunner, Disney Dreamlight Valley, No Man's Sky, Dragonheir: Silent Gods and Layers of Fear. To simplify the process of moving games from other platforms to the Mac, Metal has released a new suite of game migration tools that can save game developers months of upfront work. Developers can now preview how their existing games will run on the Mac in just a few days. They've also dramatically simplified the process of converting game shaders and graphics code to take full advantage of Apple's chips, significantly reducing the overall time spent on game development.

macOS Sonoma also introduces Game Mode, giving gamers a valuable millisecond performance advantage. Game Mode delivers an optimized gaming experience at smoother, more consistent frame rates by ensuring gaming tasks receive the highest priority on both the CPU and GPU. Game Mode also increases the immersion of Mac gaming experiences, doubles the Bluetooth sampling rate, dramatically reduces audio latency on AirPods, and dramatically reduces input lag on popular gamepads like Xbox and PlayStation. Game Mode works with all games, including all recent and upcoming Mac games.

The newly launched game mode brings an optimized gaming experience, making the picture smoother by improving the frame rate, and greatly reducing the delay when using AirPods and third-party game controllers.

Boost Hybrid and Remote Pro-Level Workflows

With the advanced media engine built into Apple silicon, macOS Sonoma brings a new high-performance mode to screen-sharing apps. Remotely access hybrid studio live and remote pro-level workflows with ultra-responsive, low-latency audio, high frame-rate video, and support for up to two virtual displays. With this mode, professional creators can securely access their content creation workflow from anywhere—whether editing in Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve, or creating complex 3D animation footage (sysin) in Maya. With the support of reference colors, users can also remotely implement color adjustment workflows that have traditionally been accomplished only with dedicated hardware and professional software.

Accessibility improvements

macOS Sonoma lets all users customize their Mac even more by introducing a series of accessibility features. For hearing-impaired users, Made for iPhone hearing aids can be connected to a Mac for calls and media viewing1, while users with disabilities can use Live Voice to type their thoughts into speech during calls and conversations . Users with disabilities and motor disabilities get spoken suggestions when using Voice Control to dictate and edit text on a Mac. To assist users with cognitive impairments, animated images (such as GIFs) in Messages and Safari can be automatically paused. Additionally, users who are blind or have low vision can easily resize text in all apps and use Xcode with VoiceOver, Apple's industry-leading screen-reading tool.

Other macOS Sonoma updates include :

  • Simplified PDF experience : With enhanced PDF capabilities, users can fill out forms quickly with autofill and get smart recipient recommendations.
  • Live editing of PDFs in Notes : Notes can now display PDF and scanned document pages at full width, and users can quickly access related notes such as recipes or homework in Linked Notes.

  • Messaging : Users can interact with their closest contacts using new stickers, and enjoy improved search, reply, groups, and messaging app syncing via iCloud.
  • Reminders : The smart shopping list feature in Reminders simplifies weekly shopping tasks. In addition, users can divide the list into sections and arrange the layout of sections horizontally using the newly introduced column view.
