Sharing experience of recommendation and exemption for the Class of 2023 - Four non-computer science graduates on the margins

The process of maintaining research for the four non-marginal people

small beginning

With the opening of the system on the 28th, I accepted Xidian's proposed admission, and the road to postgraduate study came to an end for the time being. In fact, the time actually spent preparing for postgraduate study was not long. Since I am the first batch of students in the college, and the undergraduate school is really average, it is not clear whether there will be a place for postgraduate study in my final major before September. Therefore, I have been reviewing for the postgraduate entrance examination since March. During this period, I wrote a Chinese core article under the guidance of my tutor. At that time, I just thought about possibly increasing the advantages of the re-examination. So my review progress has been slower than expected. It was about July 20 when I was about to go on summer vacation. The counselor asked me whether I should prepare for pre-exemption. So I only started to officially understand some of the details of postgraduate studies around July 25, so I have only experienced pre-referral exemptions. I hope I can provide some reference and help to those with average undergraduate degrees.

basic situation:

Undergraduate school: A certain southern Sifei University, majoring in data science and big data technology. Credit
score: 90.0/100
credit score ranking: 1/55; overall ranking: 1/55 (1 professional postgraduate quota)
English: Passed CET-4 or CET-6 (Level 6 only had 458, which was passed before the pre-referral exemption)
Scholarships and competitions: 5 or 6 national scholarships, several national and provincial awards with low gold content, such as the H Award in the American Competition, and the third prize in the National Competition in Category C Awards etc.
Scientific research: I have done several small projects, and I have done a little bit of in-depth learning with the teacher, just one article for Chinese core journals and one provincial journal (from Daisofa)

The above is some basic information about me. Mainly, I have an average undergraduate degree, not much scientific research experience, and few valuable awards.
My idea is to go to a school with stronger majors or a better school title, which will be more helpful for finding a job near my hometown (Yangtze River Delta) in the future. In my opinion, the mentor's character > academics.

During the whole process, I joined a free group spontaneously set up by Baoyaner. The group members in the group are very powerful (all are big guys), and everyone can answer various questions. There will also be 928 on the same day. The information sharing of major schools has helped me a lot. You can also join the group for reference. Group number (group 2): 943826679

"Terminology" among researchers

First of all, I would like to introduce some abbreviations that everyone knows about Baoyan for the first time.

强com(committee):导师的权利较小,学院的权利较大。

Now the general title>rk>scientific research experience (thesis)≈Level 6>competition>Other
application difficulty is generally: master's degree>professional master's degree>direct doctorate (please be careful with direct doctorate. If you are really interested in scientific research and want to continue your studies in the future, you can apply )

Pre-recommendation exemption (not participating in summer camp)

1. Master's degree from Hefei University of Technology.
Because the school is not very, very good (compared to 985 and top 211), I directly contacted an outstanding young mentor. The admissions teachers in Hegong University are very good and answer all students’ questions. The teacher team I found is also very, very good. I sent an email to the teacher in the morning, and in the afternoon the teachers in the team took the initiative to call me to understand the situation. They continued to answer my questions carefully and paid attention to whether the college sent me an email. After accepting the offer, they also told me that even if I didn’t go in the end, I could explain it to them in time.

I remember that the Hefei University of Technology has a program for Hubing students, and the pay is pretty good. I remember that an additional scholarship of 20,000 is given out every year. It doesn’t seem to be very difficult to apply. Interested students can check out the official website.

The instructor I contacted conducted a phone interview for about 40 minutes. He asked a lot of questions, but they were not too difficult, and they did not ask about the content of the professional courses. They were all based on the questions on the resume.

(6)resnet

It was my first interview and I didn’t answer some questions very well, but overall the teacher seemed quite satisfied.

After that, I participated in a formal interview organized by the college (it was mainly a process). Everyone was asked to make a PPT, and then the interview lasted about 8 to 10 minutes.

2. Chongqing University’s
major major seems to be strong on COM, and there is no review pre-recommendation exemption system during the summer vacation, but I also found a tutor and sent an email. Unexpectedly, the tutor made an appointment with me for a Tencent conference interview. I also based on my I reviewed my resume carefully. Unexpectedly, when I entered the meeting that day, a classmate was talking about his PPT (that was the first time I knew that I needed to prepare a PPT), so I sent half of it directly. Unexpectedly, the interview made me even more uncomfortable.

I was sweating all over during the interview, so I could only apologize frantically. After the interview, I knew that it was most likely to be sent, and I felt that the teacher would only interview me. After that, I still had to pass the pre-recommendation exemption from the college to have a chance. As a result, I didn’t dare to apply for a major when I was officially pre-recommended (it was a bit psychological). It seems that the important pre-recommendation exemption interview is quite late, it seems to be after September 20th.

3. Master's degree from Northeastern University.
Before I was pre-recommended and exempted from the interview, I sent an email to an NLP instructor. This teacher also responded to my email quickly. This teacher wrote the most among the teachers who replied to me. A teacher, and I think the teacher is very kind.

Northeastern University's pre-recommendation exemption interview requirements are relatively strict. It only gives about 8 minutes in total, which is very difficult. About 3 minutes of it is a PPT introduction (the PPT content mainly includes personal basic information, introduction to some subjects with better grades, etc.) Research competitions, student work, etc.), and then the teacher asks questions for 5 minutes.

Northeastern University conducted three batches of pre-recommendation and exemption interviews this year. The first two batches were as early as early September, and the last batch was in 925. My score at that time was 84.05. If I passed 80, I would be considered qualified. At that time, it was said that as long as I applied to Northeastern University as soon as possible on the day of 928, I would be admitted. But this year, a total of more than 1,000 people were interviewed in the three batches, and there should be many qualified candidates. So later I sent a message saying that I would be admitted in order of ranking, and I had to fill in my first choice. I was ranked 244, and I was a little speechless. However, due to geographical issues at Northeastern University, many people regard him as a guarantee, and many people will eventually drop him. The review started at 12 o'clock on the day of 928. I received the re-examination notice from Northeastern University 6 minutes later (usually the re-examination notice is sent first, and we will directly send the pre-admission notice after receiving it), and I still put it second. I have volunteered, so if you have fewer offers, you can try Northeastern University. After all, it is also 985.

4. School of Artificial Intelligence of Xi'an University of Electronic Science and Technology
Since most of my undergraduate studies were related to artificial intelligence (machine learning, deep learning, etc.), I directly applied to the School of Artificial Intelligence of Xidian University. Xidian's committee is a very weak one. Basically, if the teacher wants it, it will be stable. Moreover, Xidian's system review is slightly different from others. Generally, you first have an interview with the instructor. The instructor will organize the interview separately. If the instructor is willing, you can then fill in the system and the instructor will confirm it on the system. The subsequent college review is basically passed, and there will generally be no college interviews (but it seems that the application for Guangyan Institute and Hangyan Institute requires unified tutor group interviews). What everyone should note is that if you fill in the system directly and the tutor has passed the review, the system will be locked. This year, someone was approved by the tutor in the system, but they contacted the tutor for an interview but did not reply, so they could not change. Other tutors seem to have to contact the college before they may withdraw their applications. So everyone tries to reach an agreement with the instructor first.

I sent emails to my tutors in August (the Xidian system has been open for a month). At this time, many good tutors have been contacted. I contacted several more powerful tutors but they either didn’t reply or replied “please” Contact other teachers.” But as one of my ideal colleges, I kept sending emails to various teachers. Fortunately, there were still tutors who were willing to give me an interview. The email the instructor responded to seemed very harsh, but during the Tencent meeting, he spoke very gently, which was a bit different from what I expected hahahaha. For the interview, I also prepared a PPT for presentation (the teacher did not require a PPT, but I still prepared the PPT after experiencing a major lesson), and then lined up for the interview (the teacher should have arranged the students who sent her emails for the interview at the same time) , the interview process was also very simple. At the beginning, the instructor asked me to turn on the camera, asked me whether I was in school or at home, and asked me why I wanted to go to Xidian. Then he asked me to introduce my performance ranking and scientific research status in turn. Essays, competitions, etc. The teacher seemed to be very concerned about the status of scientific research papers, so he asked me how long it took to write the paper and how long it took to complete the project. No other specific details were asked. Finally, the teacher asked me if I would definitely go to Xidian.

Generally speaking, as a weak committee, many people will contact Xidian, and many big guys will use Xidian as a guarantee. There are also many people who lost Xidian in 928, so everyone can contact some mentors as early as possible. You can learn more about each tutor's academic character and make judgments.

At
the beginning of September, I was preparing to apply for and confirm the postgraduate application materials at the school. After confirming the quota, my undergraduate supervisor also recommended me a teacher from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and then also sent an email to the teacher. Unfortunately, the teacher The quota was full; they also recommended me a teacher from Sun Yat-sen University (it is said that he is the teacher’s senior brother). I was not very interested in this teacher’s research direction, so I didn’t go (now that I think about it, I regret it a little bit). Ha ha). On September 20th, I had basically decided to go to Xidian or Northeast China. After that, a teacher from Jilin University also responded to my email and asked me to interview (I didn’t know which school he was from in the email he responded to at the time, and I didn’t even remember him). When did you send an email to this teacher?), but I saw that Jilin University was further away than Northeastern University, so I gave up directly. Then I applied for pre-referral exemption from South China University of Technology and Sichuan University, but it was too late and there was no follow-up.

Summarize

I know too well the inner suffering of those who are on the margins of postgraduate entrance examinations. While preparing for postgraduate entrance examinations, they are also reviewing for the postgraduate entrance exams. Because once they prepare for postgraduate entrance examinations with all their strength but fail to get the quota in the end, the review for postgraduate entrance examinations is also far behind. I was very confused. But I can only suggest two ways for everyone in this situation (you can just refer to it, it may be wrong).

The first way is to consider yourself based on the college's postgraduate guarantee policy and the situation of your seniors, and make full preparations for postgraduate guarantee in a similar way to "gamble". From the second semester of your junior year, start collecting the summer camp policies of major 985 colleges and universities, and make adequate preparations. Make preparations (including resumes, transcripts, CET-4 and CET-6 certificates, mentor recommendation letters, etc.) and strive to get a summer camp offer from your ideal school. You must carefully prepare interview PPTs, English Q&A, etc. Don't write things you don't understand well in your resume or PPTs, otherwise you will lose big points if you don't know three questions. Students who are fully prepared for graduate school should be fully prepared for summer camps and pre-recommendation exemptions, and get some satisfactory offers and guaranteed offers (try to have guaranteed offers to prevent your ideal school from eventually passing you up).
The second way is to review for the postgraduate entrance examination, try to ensure that you have time to review for the postgraduate entrance examination every day, and use various leisure time (noon break, evening break) to collect postgraduate entrance information, prepare materials, and take time to conduct interviews, etc. But try to ensure that your postgraduate entrance examination progress does not fall too far behind. You can apply more to schools with weak committees. This process is long and tiring, so I have to grit my teeth and persevere. Even if you are not guaranteed to go to graduate school, you can still continue to review for the postgraduate entrance exam.

Marginal people need to make good choices. The current general environment is not very good. Fewer people are going abroad due to the epidemic. Competition among major domestic schools has also become much greater, and each big boss has received many offers. As a result, other people have fewer opportunities. Therefore, there are many strange phenomena in 928 this year. Many schools have been targeted directly. As far as I know, hundreds of people in front of the Southeast Internet Security Network have targeted the school. In some 985 groups, everyone is relaying "I'm sorry I can't come here", and some school teachers are calling everywhere. Ask the students if they are coming.

So everyone should be cautious. It is always right to prepare early. Try more, seize every opportunity, and do your best. I hope that every graduate student can receive an offer from his or her ideal school.

What I said is not necessarily accurate, it is for your reference only. You can read more about the experiences posted by other big guys, come on! ! !
