Introduction

The Battery Management System (BMS) is an electronic system used to monitor and manage battery packs. BMS is mainly used in rechargeable battery systems such as lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, and nickel-metal hydride batteries. Its main purpose is to ensure that the battery operates in a safe, efficient, and reliable state to improve battery life, performance, and safety.

The main function

Battery monitoring: BMS monitors battery voltage, current, temperature and other parameters in real time to ensure that the battery operates within the normal operating range. At the same time, BMS can also monitor the battery's charge and discharge times, capacity and other information to evaluate the health of the battery.

Charge and discharge control: BMS realizes battery charge and discharge management by controlling chargers and load devices. It can limit charging current and voltage to prevent overcharging; similarly, BMS can also limit discharging current to prevent overdischarging.

Temperature management: The temperature of a battery has a significant impact on its performance and lifetime. The BMS monitors the battery temperature through a temperature sensor, and starts or turns off cooling devices (such as fans, heat sinks, etc.) when necessary to keep the battery operating within a suitable temperature range.

Balance management: A battery pack is usually composed of multiple battery cells, and these cells may have inconsistent parameters such as capacity and voltage during use. BMS can implement balanced management, by transferring the energy of the high-voltage battery to the low-voltage battery, so as to achieve the balanced state of each cell in the battery pack, thereby improving the performance and service life of the entire battery pack.

Protection function: BMS has a variety of protection functions, such as overcharge protection, over discharge protection, over temperature protection, short circuit protection, etc. When the battery is abnormal, BMS will take measures in time, such as cutting off the charging and discharging circuit, to prevent battery damage or even safety accidents.

Communication function: BMS usually has a communication function, which can exchange data with external devices (such as chargers, load devices, host computers, etc.). Through this communication function, users can know the status and performance of the battery in real time, and perform remote diagnosis and debugging.
