Since open source software is mainly developed by programmers scattered all over the world, the open source community has become a necessary place for them to communicate and exchange. We have discovered today that the open source community plays a huge role in promoting the development of open source software, which was unimaginable more than two decades ago.

GitHub community

The GitHub community is a hosting platform for open source and private software projects. It is named GitHub because it only supports Git as the only repository format for hosting.

GitHub was officially launched on April 10, 2008. In addition to Git code warehouse hosting and basic web management interface, it also provides subscriptions, discussion groups, text rendering, online file editors, collaborative graphs (reports), and code snippet sharing ( Gist) and other functions. At present, its registered users have exceeded 3.5 million, and the number of hosted versions is also very large, including many well-known open source projects such as Ruby on Rails, jQuery, and Python.

On June 4, 2018, Microsoft announced that it had acquired the code hosting platform GitHub through a $7.5 billion stock transaction. So, now Microsoft has become an important force supporting open source.

Its URL is: https://github.com.

GitLab

GitLab is an open source project for code warehouse management system, using Git as a code management tool, and a web service built on this basis. For the installation method, please refer to GitLab's Wiki page on GitHub.

GitLab is a web-based Git warehouse management tool developed by GitLab Inc. using the MIT license, and has Wiki and Issue tracking functions.

Developed by Ukrainian programmers Dmitriy Zaporozhets and Valery Sizov, GitLab is written in Ruby and partially rewritten in Go. As of May 2018, the company has approximately 290 team members, and more than 2,000 open source contributors. GitLab is used by IBM, Sony, NASA, Alibaba, Invincea, O'ReillyMedia, Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (LRZ), CERN, SpaceX and other organizations.

Initially, the product, named GitLab, is completely free and open source software distributed under the MIT license.

In July 2013, the product was split into: GitLabCE (Community Edition) and GitLabEE (Enterprise Edition). At the time, the license for GitLabCE and GitLabEE was still free and open source software distributed under the MIT license.

In February 2014, GitLab announced the adoption of an open core business model. GitLabEE is set up under a proprietary license and includes features not present in the CE version.

In July 2015, the company raised another $1.5 million in seed funding. Clients as of 2015 include Alibaba Group, IBM and SpaceX.

Afterwards, the operation and maintenance personnel checked and found that the multiple backup measures announced and equipped by the website were not working properly or were difficult to use. GitLab livestreamed the recovery process on YouTube. The site ended up losing the last 6 hours of database data (including issues, merge requests, comments, snippets, etc., excluding the codebase).
