Android 14 Beta 5 is out now , the last planned update in the Android 14 Beta program. Beta 5 is available for the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold, in addition to supporting the rest of the Pixel family and the Android emulator.
Beta 5 is the third version of the Android 14 Platform Stability phase, which means that developer APIs and all app-facing behaviors are final and ready to be integrated into apps. Developers can distribute apps using version 34 of the Android 14 SDK on Google Play. It includes the latest fixes and optimizations, giving developers everything they need to complete their testing.
Some major changes include:
- Grant partial access to photos and videos - On Android 14, when an app requests any of the visual media permissions introduced in Android 13 (API level 33), users can grant partial access to their photos and videos: READ_MEDIA_IMAGES or READ_MEDIA_VIDEO . If your application already uses photo picker , no action is required to support this change. Otherwise, you should use the new READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTED permission to optimize your user experience .
- Safe full-screen intent notifications - On Android 14, apps that create full-screen intent notifications are limited to apps that only offer calls and alarms, and the Google Play Store will revoke the default USE_FULL_SCREEN_INTENT permission for any app that doesn't comply with this profile .
- Schedule exact alarms are denied by default - Starting with Android 14, most newly installed apps targeting Android 13 and higher are no longer pre-granted the SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM permission - which is denied by default.
- Non-linear font scaling up to 200% - Beginning with Android 14, the system supports font scaling up to 200% for small text sizes, providing low-vision users with more accessibility options that comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) .
