Apple AppleGPT is here!
Bloomberg broke the news that the company is creating its own chatbot, code-named Ajax.
Inside the company, engineers call it AppleGPT, and it's expected to launch in a consumer-grade version next year.
But until now, there haven't been any public release plans or details.
The entire project is co-led by John Giannandrea, senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, and Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering , according to the sources.
At present, several teams have joined the development of the project. One of the teams is working on addressing potential privacy concerns.
In this regard, some netizens said: Apple has fallen behind in this field and needs to start developing its own version as soon as possible.
A nice differentiator is to have the chat bot work directly on the device.
Apple AppleGPT is coming
Just after Bloomberg's news came out, Apple shares rose 2.3%, adding $71 billion to its market value at its peak.
This also reflects investors' expectations for the layout of Apple's large model.
It is undeniable that since the birth of ChatGPT, these large technology companies have been restrained by investors to promote their layout of large models and AIGC.
But in the eyes of many media and industry insiders, this move is not entirely driven by Wall Street.
The reason why Apple executives have always stayed on the sidelines has to do with the core business impact.
The fierce arms race between Google and Microsoft is partly due to chatbot products represented by ChatGPT, which will have a significant transformative impact on both of their core businesses, search and productivity applications.
In comparison, for Apple's core hardware business, it seems less obvious.
But now Apple can't sit still.
As ChatGPT becomes more and more powerful and is launched on the iOS side, it will have a direct impact on the user interface of Apple products. Consumers began to compare the differences between ChatGPT and Siri.
Cook also said in the latest interview that he is paying close attention to generative AI.
According to sources, Apple had previously considered signing a contract with OpenAI and trialing OpenAI technology, but ultimately did not do so.
At present, this project has also surfaced with the news of Bloomberg.
The Ajax platform was created to "unify machine learning development", named Ajax because it is based on the Google Jax machine learning framework, and will be jointly led by John Giannandrea and Craig Federighi.
John Giannandrea, currently Apple's senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, reports directly to Cook.
He joined Apple back in 2018 and is responsible for overseeing the company-wide AI and ML strategy and the development of Core ML and Siri technologies. Before joining Apple, he spent eight years at Google, leading the machine intelligence, research and search teams.
Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, reports directly to Cook. He is responsible for the development of iOS and macOS, delivering the core software of Apple's innovative products, including user interfaces, applications and frameworks.
On Apple's official career interface, it is committed to recruiting experienced engineers in machine learning infrastructure, deep learning and reinforcement learning, natural language processing and speech technology. There are currently 180 vacancies.
While the plans are unclear, Bloomberg quoted sources as saying that Apple hopes to make a "major AI-related announcement" sometime next year.
Prior to this, Apple had banned employees ChatGPT and Copilot in the name of worrying about data leakage.
Acquired AI start-ups many times
In fact, Apple has been actively acquiring startups to strengthen its artificial intelligence layout.
The most publicized acquisition progress is that there will be at least four AI startups acquired in 2020.
Among them, Xnor.ai and Vilynx were successively acquired for US$200 million and US$50 million.
The former, based in Seattle, focuses on low-power, edge-based artificial intelligence tools, such as image processing software.
The latter is working on developing video AI tools that can "understand" video content and classify information. Apple could use these tools to improve Siri and other apps. At the same time, the company's 50 engineers and data scientists will also be directly absorbed by Apple.
In addition, there are Voysis, which is working on accurate understanding of natural language technology, and Inductiv, which automates the correction of data defects to improve the intelligence of Siri.
