ready to test

It's that time of year again! We'd like to get your feedback on some of the new features we plan to introduce to the VMware Workstation product line this year.

This tech preview focuses on lower-level features, such as a new virtual machine encryption scheme and improved programmatic support for virtual machines with vTPM, such as Windows 11. Not only can you now perform operations (sysin) on encrypted virtual machines via the REST API and vmrun, but you can also more securely export and import virtual machines with vTPM requirements using OVFTool.

new features

Enhanced Security for Virtual Machine Encryption

We introduce XTS algorithm for virtual machine encryption and decryption to achieve strong security. This applies to existing and new virtual machines, for more information follow this link .

Import/export support for vTPM-enabled virtual machines

We have to be careful while importing/exporting/cloning vTPM enabled virtual machines because some critical keys/passwords will be stored in vTPM and we should not accidentally or intentionally migrate from one system to another, so we come up with some standard procedures and enhancements when importing/exporting/cloning vTPM enabled machines. Please follow this link for more information.

Power operations on encrypted virtual machines via vmrun and vmrest

Both the local vmrun CLI and the local+remote vmrest REST API now support power operations (sysin) on encrypted VMs and VMs with a vTPM. vmrun also supports the "gui" flag for encrypted virtual machines.

Virtual Hardware 21

With HWv21, we implemented the NVMe 1.3 specification, along with many underlying improvements, including the latest guest operating systems and Linux kernel 6.x support.
