Top 8 programming languages in demand in 2023: Strong PHP, slowing C/C++ demand

In the past 17 months (January 2022 to May 2023), DevJobsScanner analyzed more than 14 million developer jobs and screened jobs with clear programming language needs, and came up with the 8 most in-demand languages in 2023.

The top eight languages with the highest demand in the market are:

1、JavaScript / TypeScript

As ever, Javascript remains popular and is the most in-demand programming language in the overall market; and  the arrival of TypeScript may also have contributed to this milestone. TypeScript's popularity has only grown in recent years, and many new JavaScript frameworks, such as Angular or NestJS, are written entirely in TypeScript.

From January 2022 to May 2023, DevJobsScanner found a total of 915,000 job opportunities with JavaScript or TypeScript requirements, accounting for about 29% of jobs with explicit programming language requirements.

2、Python

Python becomes the second most in-demand programming language in 2023. DevJobsScanner  says its versatility, from scripting to running servers to data analysis, has been key to achieving this milestone. Also, Python has one of the greatest and larger communities.

Over the 17 months, researchers identified 603,000 jobs, or about 20 percent.

3、Java

Java is the third most-demanded programming language and has been very popular since its creation in 1995. Although this popularity has declined over the past few years with the advent of more modern languages such as Kotlin, it still holds the top three positions firmly. The presence of many well-known companies using frameworks like Spring also helps Java maintain this position.

Researchers identified a total of 546,000 job opportunities in the past 17 months, or about 17 percent.

4、C#

In fourth place is C#, a general-purpose, multi-paradigm, object-oriented programming language created primarily to address some of C++'s weaknesses. As a general-purpose language, C# has a wide range of use cases. The most common usage of C# is with the .NET Framework. It is also heavily used for scripting in the Unity game framework. Both .NET Framework and Unity are popular among top companies.

Researchers identified a total of 375,000 job opportunities in the past 17 months, or about 12 percent.

5、PHP

Introduced 27 years ago, PHP is still the fifth most-demanded programming language. As of May 2023, PHP accounts for 10% of the total developer job demand, which means that 1 in every 10 development jobs requires PHP.

PHP is primarily used for web development, in conjunction with frameworks like Laravel or Wordpress.

6、C/C++

It has been 50 years since  the first release of the C language, and 37 years since the birth of C++. The original name of C++ was "C with Classes". During this long time window, C/C++ has maintained its popularity through regular additions and improvements to the language. Modern C++ includes features such as object orientation and generics. It has a wide range of applications in the industry, and C++ can be seen in many places such as video games, servers, databases, and even space probes.

Demand for C/C++ appears to have slowed in 2023, with its share falling from nearly 13% in February to 7% in May of the same year.

7、Ruby

Ruby came in seventh, with 134,000 job openings (approximately 4% of total job demand). Its most popular use is in conjunction with the Web framework Ruby on Rails. Although the top seven may not seem like a lot , Ruby is used in some of today's big tech companies, such as Twitter, Crunchbase or Github.

8、GO

Go is a young language created by Google 12 years ago. Google designed Go to make programming more productive in the age of multi-core, networked machines, and large code bases. As shown in the chart below, Go’s popularity is slowly growing, and DevJobsScanner  predicts that the language may break into the top five by 2023. Companies like Uber, Twitch, and others are using Go.

Most Demanded Programming Languages (Complete List)

Here is a complete chart of programming languages and their respective requirements in 2023:

Summarize

DevJobsScanner  pointed out that it is clear that Javascript and Typescript do dominate the developer job market. Together, Javascript and Typescript account for 29% of jobs that explicitly require a programming language, which means that almost one in every three jobs requires Javascript or Typescript.

Python and Java are also still the second and third most in-demand programming languages in 2023 respectively, providing a large number of employment opportunities. But it's worth noting that Java is closing the gap on Python, with Java outnumbering Python for several months in the survey. "Thus, those who say Java is an obsolete programming language may need to rethink their wording."

C#, PHP, Ruby, and Go all showed steady job demand, suggesting they could all be solid choices as programming languages. However, it is worth noting that although the demand for C/C++ has increased in 2022, as far as the current situation in 2023 is concerned, it is facing a downward trend.
