Similarities and differences between Sui developer network, testnet and mainnet

Before the official launch of the mainnet, Sui released two waves of testnets and an independent developer network for developers and project parties to test . Some functions and parameters of the main network are slightly different from these networks. This article takes stock of the similarities and differences of these three networks in terms of functions and parameters. View network information and update plan

validator set

The Sui network is run by a set of independent validator nodes, each validator running its own Sui software object on an independent machine (or a sharded cluster of machines run by the same entity). Validators will participate in the network by processing read and write requests sent by clients.

Developer Network: 4 validator nodes operated by Mystens Labs
Testnet: 95 independent validator nodes and 2 validator nodes operated by Mystens Labs
Mainnet: 98 independent validator nodes and 2 validator nodes operated by Mystens Labs

full node

Sui full nodes are responsible for verifying blockchain activities, including transactions, checkpoints, and Epoch changes. Each full node simultaneously stores data, provides blockchain status and query history services.

Developer Network: The community and Mystens Labs operate their own full-node
test network: the same developer network
Main network: the same developer network

Validator location

The location of the verification node will be determined according to the location of the verification node, and the distribution of multiple verification nodes will improve the overall degree of decentralization of the Sui network.

Developer Network: US East
Test Network: Geographically distributed with verification node operators
Main Network: Same as Test Network

JSON API URL

Each Sui network has a different JSON API URL for developers to connect and develop according to their needs.

Developer Network: https://fullnode.devnet.sui.io/
Test Network: https://fullnode.testnet.sui.io/
Main Network: https://fullnode.mainnet.sui.io/

Discord faucet

The Discord faucet provides free test tokens for developers, which is convenient for developers and users to conduct functional tests according to their needs.

Developer Network: Designated Discord Channel
Test Network: Same as Developer Network
Main Network: None

Pick up SUI by tap

Each Token faucet of the Sui network will provide 1 SUI for each request, and the main network does not provide this service.

Developer Network: Get 1 SUI per request
Testnet: Same as Developer Network
Mainnet: None

Epoch duration

Epoch is the operating unit of the Sui network. The Epoch of each network is 24 hours. The network will calculate and determine the price of Gas in units of Epoch.

Developer Network: 24 hours
Testnet: Same as Developer Network
Main Network: Same as Developer Network

Reference Gas price

The reference Gas price provides Sui network users with information to infer the expected Gas price when performing operations.

Developer network: 1000 MIST
Test network: Initially set to 1000 MIST, but later will be determined according to the Gas price survey that the verification node participates in each Epoch
Main network: Same as the test network

Storage Gas Price

The storage Gas price represents the price of permanently storing a unit object, expressed in MIST or SUI.

Developer Network:  76 MIST
Testnet : Same as Developer Network
Main Network: Same as Developer Network

Pledge subsidy

Pledge subsidies are rewards provided to node operators to subsidize operating costs, including costs such as manpower and equipment.

Developer Network : 1 billion SUIs have been locked as a pledge subsidy, which will be issued in the second Epoch, and each of the first 10 Epochs will issue 1 million SUIs. Afterwards, the pledge subsidy will be reduced by 10% and maintained for 10 Epochs. This pattern will be repeated until all locked SUIs are released. Testnet: Same as
developer network
Mainnet: 1 billion SUIs have been locked As a pledge subsidy, it will be issued on the 20th Epoch, and each of the first 90 Epochs will issue 111,111,111 SUI. Afterwards, the pledge subsidy will be reduced by 10% and maintained for 90 Epochs, and this pattern will be repeated until all locked SUIs are issued

Version update frequency

The Sui developer and test network will be regularly updated to patch bugs and test new network features.

Developer Network: Weekly update and frequent updates from time to time
Testnet : Update every two weeks
Mainnet: Update every two weeks (it will be updated after the testnet, because the scheduled version will be launched on the testnet first)

Data retention period

In order to ensure network space, the developer network and test network will regularly clean up data.

Developer Network: Data may be cleaned with fixed software updates
Testnet: Data cleaning is not included in fixed software updates. Released after data cleansing scheduled software update scheduled, time will be scheduled before update
Mainnet: permanent preservation

Technical Support

Mysten Labs will provide the most timely technical support for vulnerabilities and incident types.

Developer Network: Mysten Labs is always online and the event management protocol operated by Mysten Labs
Testnet: event management and coordination by the validator community
Mainnet: Same as the testnet

About Sui Network

Sui is an L1 public chain redesigned and constructed based on first principles, aiming to provide creators and developers with a development platform capable of carrying the next billion users in Web3. Applications on Sui are based on the Move smart contract language and are horizontally scalable, allowing developers to support a wide range of application development quickly and at low cost.
