The era of Industry 4.0 is coming, the performance of POWERLINK protocol under Gigabit network card

"Industry 4.0" is making great strides, and the voice of "smart manufacturing" and "smart factory" is getting louder and louder. These requirements make the amount of data transmission larger and higher, and the real-time performance is higher and higher, so we upgraded the POWERLINK from 100Mbps to 1000Mbps. After testing the performance of POWERLINK, an industrial bus protocol, the shortest communication cycle has reached an astonishing 9us. Only the PHY chip has been upgraded to 1000Mbps, and the cost has not increased significantly.

1 Hardware platform:
This solution adopts FPGA as the main chip, implements MAC and POWERLINK communication protocols of Gigabit Ethernet in FPGA, uses Verilog HDL language, and reaches microsecond-level hard real-time level. The hardware selected here is the ZYNQ hardware plate from Mill Technology.

2 Performance:
data transmission rate: 1000Mbps
shortest communication cycle: 9us
each time a station is added, the communication cycle increases by about 4us

3 Timing:
It takes about 1us to transmit a 100bytes data frame, and the interval between two data frames is about 1us.

 4 Price:
The cost has barely increased.
Compared with the 100Mbps POWERLINK solution, the 1000Mbps POWERLINK requires the Ethernet physical layer PHY to support 1000Mbps, and most of the PHY chips currently support 100/1000Mbps.

Summarize

As a special network, the industrial control network is directly oriented to the production process, shoulders the special task of the first-line measurement and control information transmission of industrial production operations, and generates or triggers the movement and conversion of matter or energy, so it usually should meet strong real-time performance , high reliability, harsh industrial field environment adaptability, bus power supply and other special requirements and characteristics. When it comes to this, most people will have various field bus (field bus) names in their minds, Can, profibus, modbus, etc., but these Field Buses have their own characteristics, each has its own development background, and they are not compatible with each other. In the market, each has its own specialized market and supporters. For more than 20 years, each side has held its own, and it is impossible to compromise a common international standard. In the later actual project implementation, communication problems of various field buses were inevitably involved, such as the communication with the blower equipment (imported from abroad) Profibus-dp, and the multi-function electricity collector in the high and low voltage room, ultraviolet disinfection Modbus communication of equipment control system, so is there a better bus standard to choose from in similar projects? The technology of Ethernet Powerlink (EPL) industrial real-time Ethernet is undoubtedly impressive.

POWERLINK technology

ETHERNET POWERLINK (EPL for short) International Standardization Organization EPSG ( www.epsg.org ) was established in 2001 and launched a series of products in 2003. As of the end of November 2007, more than 240 OEM users around the world have used EPL on more than 40,000 devices and projects. EPL has more than 450 members, users and supporters around the world, and the number of nodes exceeds 300,000. The main technical indicators of EPL are: using standard Ethernet IEEE802.3u (Fast Ether-net) as the transmission medium; transmission rate 100Mb/s; using standard Hub and standard wiring; Simultaneously transmit real-time and non-real-time data; can transmit IP protocol simultaneously; use Ethernet standard hardware equipment, and support redundant technology. It not only has the standard reliability and environmental adaptability of industrial Ethernet, but also solves the real-time problem of standard Ethernet TCP/IP protocol very well. Since we are more inclined to its practical application effect, the internal working mechanism of EPL Not in the description, interested friends can browse the relevant websites or contact the EPSG organization.
