VMwareWorkStation how to add 10 Gigabit network card, 10 Gigabit network card add tutorial

1 Introduction

Unlike ESXi, there is no option to select the speed level of the network card after adding the network card in VMware WorkStation (hereafter referred to as VMware), such as 100M, 1000M, 10000M, etc. Even clicking "Advanced" in the lower right corner doesn't work. However, according to VMware's default settings, when a new virtual machine is created with a 32-bit operating system, a 100M network card is allocated, and when a 64-bit operating system is selected, a Gigabit network card is allocated, but there is no case where a 10G network card is allocated by default, which is surprising. Very upset!

This tutorial proposes a solution to the problem of how to add a 10 Gigabit NIC in the Windows-based version of VMware, and puts it into practice. The tutorial for adding 10 Gigabit network cards to VMware for Linux will be added later, so look forward to it.

2. How to add 10 Gigabit NIC in VMware for Windows

First, shut down the virtual machine whose NIC you want to modify.

On the host system (computer running VMware), find the storage directory of the virtual machine file you want to modify, and find the file with the .vmx suffix, as shown below

Right-click, and choose to open with Notepad, and find the configuration information related to the network card, as shown in the figure below

Among them, the number at the beginning of ethernet represents the network card, and the numbers after it

It is the number after the "network adapter" on the configuration interface minus 1. Note that if there is only one network card, then the "network adapter" without a number behind it is the corresponding ethernet0 in the .vmx configuration file

After the "." after each network card name is the attribute of the network card, such as ethernet0.virtualDev, where virtualDev is an attribute of this network card, and this is where we need to change.

Change the attribute here to vmxnet3, as shown below after modification

Finally, start the virtual machine, check the network card information, and find that the network card has become a 10G network card, as shown below
