The top 20

May headlines: Where are the new programming languages?
As mentioned earlier, the popularity of programming languages is fairly stable. If we look at the top 10 programming languages in the TIOBE index, then C# is the youngest of them all. C# started in 2000. That was 23 years ago! A new programming language is born almost every day, but almost none of them make it into the top 100. At least not in their first 10 years. In the current top 100, the only languages under 10 years old are: Swift (#14), Rust (#17), Crystal (#48), Solidity (#59), Pony (#71) , Raku (No. 72), Zig (No. 88) and Hack (No. 92). They are all under 5 years old. In other words, as a newbie, it's nearly impossible to climb the leaderboards. Instead, we see golden oldies revived. Take Fortran, for example, which is back in the top 20 due to the growing demand for numerical computing power. So, if you just invented a whole new language, be patient!

The TIOBE Programming Community Index is an indicator of the popularity of programming languages. The index is updated monthly. Ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers worldwide, courses and third-party suppliers. Popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo! ,! , Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube and Baidu are used to calculate ratings. It is important to note that the TIOBE index has nothing to do with the best programming language or the language in which most lines of code are written.

This index can be used to check whether your programming skills are still up to date, or to make strategic decisions about which programming language to use when starting to build a new software system. The definition of the TIOBE index can be found here.
