The number of contributors to China's open source projects has exceeded 100,000, the number of projects cultivated by the top ten enterprises accounted for more than 70%, the proportion of open source projects in the three major fields of front-end, artificial intelligence and cloud native has exceeded 62.51%, and the average score of China's open source projects reached 3.39... This series of figures shows that China has achieved remarkable results in the field of open source.

Along with the growth of China's open source power, the InfoQ Research Center has also released many research results in the field of open source, and released the "China Open Source Ecological Map 2023" today.

In order to ensure that the report can bring accurate incremental information to readers, we adhere to the principles of neutrality and data supremacy. The entire report summarizes and cleans the relevant data of 931 Chinese open source projects included in the report. The data sources include code hosting platforms such as GitHub and Gitee. The data collection time is March 2023. Opinions from various experts from Kaiyuanshe, Huawei Opensource, Tencent Opensource Alliance, OpenI Qizhi Community, Byte Opensource (arranged in alphabetical order), etc., strive to bring readers a report that is closest to the factual standard and can be used as a reference content.

In the report, the InfoQ Research Center collected and sorted out China's open source ecological map covering seven subdivisions and ecological institutions, among which the seven subdivisions are operating system, database, artificial intelligence, cloud native, big data, front-end, middle Ecological institutions include laboratories/research institutes, open source foundations, open source industry alliances, developer communities, and code hosting platforms.

Some key conclusions

1

Insights into Chinese Open Source Projects

What is the scale of open source projects in China? How many business organizations are covered? How many contributors are included in the project? How is the project evaluation? What is the field distribution?

Atlas has included a total of 913 Chinese open source projects, which come from code hosting platforms including GitHub, Gitee, GitLab, and OpenI Qizhi Community. The sponsors include 91 enterprise organizations and 43 individual developers. Overall, the 913 projects included include 112,136 contributors (not deduplicated), and a total of 3,009,025  stars have been obtained. The 870 projects included in GitHub include a total of 58,872  contributors (not deduplicated), and a total of 2,934,777  stars have been obtained.

Front-End, AI and Cloud Native

It is the most active field in China's open source field

After further analysis of the 931 projects included, InfoQ Research Center found that front-end, artificial intelligence and cloud native are the most active open source fields in China, with 239, 211 and 132 open source projects respectively, accounting for a total of 62.51%.

Among the 870 single open source projects included on GitHub, the linuxdeepin/deepin-kernel project has 11,551 contributors, making it the Chinese open source project with the largest number of contributors on GitHub. ant-design/ant-design (85150 Stars) is currently the Chinese open source project with the largest number of Stars on GitHub.

Middleware, database, big data and operating system fields

The item average score is higher than the overall average score

In the previous report, we used the InfoQ open source project index to analyze and evaluate existing open source projects. This index includes two dimensions of code value and community activity, which are further divided into 8 quantifiable indicators and assigned scores. In the "China Open Source Ecological Atlas 2023", we also performed the same scoring process on the 870 projects on GitHub included. Among them, front-end (693.15 points), artificial intelligence (525.01 points), and database (434.17 points) are the three segments with the highest overall scores.

From the average score, the average score of 870 items is 3.39. The average scores of middleware (8.25 points), database (8.19 points), big data (6.41 points), and operating system (6.04 points) are higher than the overall average score, which shows that the development of open source in these four fields is relatively mature.

More than half of GitHub Top100 projects

In the three major fields of front-end, database and artificial intelligence

In addition, the InfoQ Research Center also conducted further research on the top 100 projects on Github. Front-end, database, and artificial intelligence are the top three fields in China's Top 100 open source projects, accounting for 19%, 18%, and 18% of the Top 100 projects, respectively.

The above is InfoQ Research Center's interpretation of China's open source ecological map and open source projects. We are pleased to find that with the development of China's technological strength, China's open source power is also constantly accumulating. As a research institution that continues to focus on open source, InfoQ Research Center will continue to accompany the growth of China's open source field and contribute its own strength through research output.
