VR big data in April: PICO platform has nearly 400 applications, leading the domestic VR ecosystem

Hello everyone, the monthly VR content/hardware big data statistics meet with you again. Do you want to know the market of VR software and hardware? Just follow here. We will count data such as users and content on the Steam platform, and push it to you on time at the beginning of each month, don't miss it!

This data report includes: Steam VR hardware statistics, Steam VR game statistics, Oculus (Rift, Quest, App Lab) game statistics, SideQuest game statistics.

Since the Steam platform simplified the classification of VR tags on the game page in December 2022, and canceled information such as supported models of VR devices (one of the reasons is the promotion of OpenXR, which is more versatile and less meaningful to display), so the statistical part also will simplify.

VR hardware big data

According to statistics released by the Steam platform, in April 2023, active SteamVR players accounted for 1.93% of the total number of Steam players, a 0.55 percentage point increase from the previous month (1.38%), which further corrected the sharp drop in March. Compared with the annual average, it is still lower.

Because the Steam platform has not yet released 2022 MAU and other data, judging from the data of 132 million monthly active users on Steam in 2021, it is not rigorously estimated that the number of active users of SteamVR in April is 2.5476 million .

The top three active SteamVR devices in April are: Oculus Quest 2 (45.14% ↑), Valve Index HMD (17.02% ↓), Oculus Rift S (11.71% →).

According to the statistics in April, all models have not changed much, and the growth rate is within 1 percentage point.

Reminder: The data related to all-in-one VR machines on the Steam platform is only for users who participate in streaming, because not all all-in-one machine users use the streaming function, and users who only use the all-in-one machine mode (not streaming) are not included in the statistics . It also proves in turn that Quest 2 is powerful enough, not only to dominate the VR all-in-one market, but also to erode the PC VR market in turn, so that now PC VR is in a downturn and there are few new products.

In terms of hardware brand distribution, the distribution of SteamVR in April is: Oculus (64.31% ↑), Valve (17.02% ↓), HTC (9.21% ↑), Windows MR series (4.91% ↓), PICO (1.97% ↑), Pimax (0.27% ↓).

Trends of Mainstream VR Devices

From the perspective of single-device statistics, there is not much change. Combined with the sharp drop in Steam VR active users last month and the sharp increase this month, it is more likely to guess that the data will be wrong. Of course, the number of high-quality games on the PC VR side is very small recently, which further leads to a decrease in overall user activity.

From the perspective of device distribution, the overall situation tends to be stable, and the next big change must be with the release of new blockbuster VR products, such as Quest 3 or Valve's next-generation VR.

Steam platform VR application data

Regarding the SteamVR platform, according to the statistics of Qingting.com, as of the end of April 2023, the total number of Steam platform applications is 149,697 (146,953 in the previous month), of which 7,344 are VR-supporting (7,290 in the previous month). 54 more than last month, VR applications accounted for about 4.90% of the total number of Steam applications.

VR exclusive content ("exclusive" refers to the application that only provides VR mode) totaled 6,079 (6,040 in the previous month), an increase of 39 from the previous month, and the exclusive content accounted for about 82.77% of the total number of VR content. Among them, there are 4,817 exclusive VR games (4,791 in the previous month), an increase of 26 from the previous month.

Oculus platform application data

As for the Oculus platform, as of the end of April, the number of Oculus Rift platform applications was 1342 ; the number of Oculus Quest platform applications was 466 .

As of now, there are 104 games that support Oculus Rift and Quest cross-platform purchase (Crossbuy). Generally speaking, this data will not fluctuate greatly, or even decrease. After all, the Oculus platform pays less and less attention to PC VR content.

App Lab, the official testing platform of Oculus, has grown rapidly since its launch at the beginning of last year (it has slowed down recently). According to the latest statistics at the end of April this year, the number of App Lab applications and games has reached 1,745. App Lab alone exceeds the number of content on the Rift platform . So now the App Lab platform is vigorously promoting the content diversity of Quest, and it also includes a large number of imaginative applications.

Although the third-party platform SideQuest continues to grow, its application data is complicated. According to statistics from Qingting.com, the number of SideQuest's latest applications has reached 5,297, of which 1,305 are paid applications. Note: SideQuest statistics are not accurate, because it counts platform content such as Oculus store applications, App Lab applications, Itch.io or Patreon (which can be understood as the total number of Quest items that can be searched), and the same item can be distributed Multiple plugins or DLC, resulting in cluttered data, for reference only.

In addition, judging from the figure above, the scale of the PICO app store is also growing rapidly, especially in the last month. Not only the number of nearly 400 models (domestic), but also the domestic VR platform with the most overseas VR masterpieces. PICO is ahead of domestic competitors in terms of application quality and quantity, and this leading advantage is still expanding.
