Topic: Zero-Intrusive Cloud-Native Observability Using eBPF

Guest: Xiangyang | Yunshan Network R&D VP
Speech time: 13:30-14:05
Introduction to the topic: Microservices, cloud native and other driving forces have brought about tremendous changes in the application architecture. The number of services has increased and the complexity of individual services has decreased, but the overall complexity of distributed applications has increased dramatically. In a cloud-native environment, how to achieve application observability and make business controllable has become an important problem faced by developers. Utilizing the new kernel programmability released by eBPF, DeepFlow innovatively realizes the capabilities of AutoMetrics, AutoTracing, and AutoLogging. Developers can realize full-stack observability of cloud-native applications without piling codes.

Topic: Wasm-bpf: Building a Programmable Bridge between WebAssembly and eBPF Kernel

Guest: Zheng Yusheng | Longli community eBPF technology exploration sig Maintainer, OpenEuler programmable kernel SIG Commiter
Speech time: 14:05-14:40
Introduction to the topic: Wasm-bpf is a brand new open source project, which defines a set of abstraction of eBPF-related system interfaces, and provides a set of corresponding development toolchains, libraries, and general Wasm + eBPF runtime platform instances, allowing any Applications in Wasm virtual machines or Wasm lightweight containers have the ability to sink and expand usage scenarios to the kernel state, obtain almost all data in the kernel state and user state, and implement control over the entire operating system in terms of network and security. Programmable control at the level, thus greatly expanding the application scenarios of the WebAssembly ecosystem on the non-browser side. Relatively speaking, the advantages of Wasm can also be extended from user mode to kernel mode. With the continuous improvement of the ecological support of the Wasm component model, we can also bring more user mode development languages to the eBPF community, and the observability of different language implementations , network and other eBPF application and data processing plug-ins can also be easily integrated, reused, unified managed, and dynamically plugged in.

Topic: BPF cold upgrade - let the lower version of the kernel use new features

Guest: Ding Tianchen | Alibaba Cloud Operating System R&D Engineer
Speech time: 14:40-15:15
Introduction to the topic: eBPF, as one of the hottest fields in the kernel in recent years, has developed extremely fast in the upstream. However, the kernel often pursues stability in the production environment, and the business side often wants to use a stable old version of the kernel, but also wants to use some newer BPF features. We conduct research and development based on the hot upgrade technology of the plugsched scheduler. After modularizing the BPF subsystem, we can adapt to flexible development needs on a stable low-version kernel, so as to achieve the effect of both. BPF cold upgrade (plugbpf) inherits the advantages of plugsched without restarting the machine and millisecond-level downtime. By replacing the kernel syscall and interface functions, the user is not aware of it. The user only needs to run normally and directly as on a high-version kernel Your own BPF program will do. plugbpf works as a module, and currently supports the 4.19 and 5.10 kernels of the x86 platform. Users can load modules after ensuring that the original system does not have active BPF programs.

Topic: Ecological Combination of eBPF and Private Computing

Guest: Huang Zhipeng | Huawei Computing Open Source Ecosystem Director
Speech time: 15:15-15:50
Introduction to the topic: In this topic, we will explain the basic knowledge of eBPF and confidential computing (Confidential Computing), some thoughts on the ecological combination of the two fields based on open source practice, and thoughts on the future development of eBPF and confidential computing.

Topic: Operation and Maintenance Polaris Index System Based on eBPF Program Camera

Guest: Chang Cheng | Founder of Kindling Open Source Project, Founder & CTO of Harmony Cloud Technology
Speech time: 15:50-16:25
Introduction to the topic: Observability technology still faces the difficulty of locating the root cause under the existing trace, log, and metrics technologies. It is a very big challenge for Internet companies to implement "1-5-10" (1 minute to find the problem, 5 minutes to find the cause, and 10 minutes to restore the business). The main reason is that the current technology for locating the root cause of the problem is still immature. Technician experience. Continues Profiling based on eBPF technology in foreign countries is a very hot topic, because Continues Profiling is expected to find the root cause of the problem. However, according to our research, Continues profiling can currently only solve the problem of a single dimension of CPU, and it is difficult to reach the trace level. It is difficult to be actually used in the case of multi-user access in the production environment. Kindling is the world's first to propose the Trace_Profiling technology based on eBPF technology, which reduces the granularity of profiling to the trace level, helps users locate a request, and converts the trace code execution process into a trace-level resource consumption process through eBPF technology, thus providing a standardized way Locate the root cause of the problem. This forum will share how Kindling builds Trace_Profiling and the applicable scenarios of Trace_Profiling.

Topic: Use eBPF instead of iptables to achieve service grid acceleration

Guest: Liu Qijun | DaoCloud Service Mesh Expert, Istio Maintainer
Speech time: 16:25-17:00
Introduction to the topic: In the service grid scenario, in order to use the sidecar to manage traffic without the application being completely aware, it is necessary to forward all the ingress and egress traffic of the Pod to the sidecar. In this case, the most common solution is to use the redirection capabilities of iptables (netfilter). The disadvantage of this solution is increased network latency, because iptables intercepts both egress and ingress traffic. Taking the ingress traffic as an example, the traffic that originally flows directly to the application needs to be forwarded by iptables to the sidecar, and then the sidecar forwards the traffic to the actual application. The link that originally only needed to be processed twice in the kernel mode has now become four times, which has lost a lot of performance. This speech will introduce the implementation principle of the Merbridge project and explain how it can achieve network acceleration for various service grid implementations (Istio, kuma, linkerd2) through eBPF.
