I have developed the habit of keeping accounts very early. With the development of accounting tools, my way of keeping accounts is getting better and better 先进和灵活. 2022 has passed, and I have fully recorded the expenses of the whole year. I would like to introduce my real consumption data , so that readers can understand the price level of Shanghai and the real consumption of ordinary code farmers.

Introduction

I use double-entry accounting + text + tools , use the popular Beancount [1] to analyze and visualize bills, and use Git to manage bill versions.

My expenses fall broadly into 5 categories:

  1. Basic Living: Covers life-sustaining and basic living expenses

  2. Health: Expenses for ensuring good health, mainly medical treatment and badminton

  3. Cloud Computing: Because I am in the computer industry, I will toss about servers, domain names, and write blogs. There is a certain amount of expenses for this

  4. Investment and financial management: public welfare, insurance and self-investment expenses

  5. Other: Expenses that are not easily categorized

Below I will introduce the consumption situation under specific categories in detail.

basic life

The bulk is the rent, which can be used freely, and the service fee is about 30,000 yuan a year.

The second is food, which costs 24,000 yuan a year, which is about 2,000 yuan a month. But this number is low, because I have no food expenses when I go home for the Chinese New Year in January, and I am at school in February, and the school canteen consumption is relatively cheap. I think the real level should be around 2600 per month.

Then I bought daily necessities such as bags, refrigerators, facial cleansers, and fresh-keeping boxes, which cost 9,000.

In the end, I spent 5,500 on buying clothes, and 4,000 on transportation (subway, taxi, high-speed rail).

These living expenses add up to 73,586.26 yuan, which is my basic living expenses in Shanghai . I don't know what level it is. Interested readers can put down their basic living expenses in the comment area, and you can compare them.

healthy

Classification Expenses (RMB)
Health products 563.33
seek medical attention 1983.53
sports 619.60

Health care products were bought for my family before, not many. Seeing a doctor means going to the hospital and buying medicines for the family during the epidemic in December last year.

Finally, there is sports. I read the detailed records, and it is basically badminton, but the frequency of the impact of the epidemic is much lower.

cloud computing

Classification Expenses (RMB)
domain name, server 1162.36
phone bill 1168.64
electronic product 7047.90

What surprised me was that the phone bill was more than 1168. In fact, I basically didn’t need such a lot of phone bills. It was completely cheated by the Unicom package . My original Unicom was the university’s campus package, which was 39 yuan per month. In 2022, their phone promotion allowed me to upgrade to 59 yuan, and also frozen more than 300 yuan of quota. My monthly call bill exceeds 59 yuan, but in fact I don’t need that much at all!

The electronics expense was high because I bought a few big things: a 4K external monitor and instant cameras. In addition, in April 22, Shanghai was dynamically cleared. My laptop operating system is ArchLinux, and I cannot use WeChat and VPN. I had to rent a laptop online for temporary work. The rent lasted more than 2 months and cost more than 1,000 yuan. .

Investment and financial management

Investment and financial management is a broad concept. It does not mean that I bought any investment products. In fact, insurance, public welfare, and self-improvement can also be considered as investment and financial management .

Classification Expenses (RMB)
public welfare 1420.61
Insurance 886
educate 766.35

Unexpectedly, public welfare expenditures are a big part of it. I opened it on a certain treasure before 公益月捐, and later donated to the Hope Project 1+1 student aid project of the China Youth Development Foundation [2] . Participating in public welfare was influenced by some books, but I can’t remember exactly which ones. It probably means that a person should help those in need within the scope of his ability, and plant the seeds of being kind to others in his heart. I think it makes sense. Public welfare can make individuals and the society develop in a better direction, and it is worth investing in .

The insurance is allocated for parents, and their share of medical insurance is not high. I mainly configure accident insurance and Jiangsu Medical Benefit Insurance for them . In addition, if readers want to configure insurance, I recommend the following two books:

  1. "Get Family Insurance in 1 Hour" Chen Tong

  2. "Easy Hands-on Family Insurance: Oscar Insurance Customs Clearance Guide" Oscar

For a detailed introduction of these two books, please refer to my 2021 reading summary , which contains a detailed introduction to these two books.

I looked at the education part, mainly buying books, magazines and visiting museums and concerts. Although it doesn't cost much money, good education requires time rather than money . I have invested far more time than money in this area, and I believe many people do the same.

Spending Analysis

With these data, it is possible to do some simple analysis, such as calculating the Engel coefficient [3] :

The Engel coefficient is finally determined by the proportion of food expenditure in the total expenditure. An Engel coefficient of more than 59% is poor, 50-59% is food and clothing, 40-50% is well-off, 30-40% is rich, and less than 30% is the richest.

According to 饮食支出/总支出the calculation, my Engel's coefficient in 2022 is 24384.04/142493.42 = 17.11%. I think this data is very unreasonable . It ignores housing expenses and cannot really reflect my level.

加上住房开支It is (24384.04+28160+2356.42)/142493.42 = 54900.46/142493.42 = 38.53%, which I think is more reasonable. In 2022, the national Engel coefficient of residents is 30.5%, which is far beyond my current situation 富裕.

Summarize

Good bookkeeping habits help me better understand my expenses. My method of recording income and expenditure in a unified way gets rid of the dependence on third-party apps such as Alipay and China Merchants Bank. I don’t need to look at the annual bills of each app at the end of the year. I not only hold the core financial data in my own hands to protect privacy , You can also do some customized analysis based on the data.

Regarding the bookkeeping tool Beancount, I personally strongly recommend it. If readers are interested, they can leave a message in the comment area. I will consider whether to introduce it specifically based on reader feedback.
