Imagination launches first edge AI course

Introduces the principles and practice of edge AI through comprehensive material and hands-on exercises

Imagination has launched a new course on artificial intelligence at the edge for undergraduates as part of the Imagination University Program (IUP). Titled "Edge AI: Principles and Practices," the course includes extensive material and hands-on exercises that give students a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of edge AI, image and speech detection and recognition.

Robert Owen, principal advisor to Imagination's Global University Programs, said: "AI at the edge is rapidly transforming technology across industries and holds enormous potential. Following the great success of our RVfpga course, we hope to further increase the availability of the next generation of developers toolkit and ensure their success in this new and exciting field. Today, we are proud to announce the official launch of the "Edge Artificial Intelligence: Principles and Practice" course. As artificial intelligence has penetrated various industries, the course will also Help students gain a solid grasp of AI technology. By focusing on real-life applications, including AI vision and speech recognition, we equip undergraduates with the right tools to build the heterogeneous SoCs of the future.

The course is designed to help students build a solid foundation in edge AI theory, providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed quickly. It includes theory and practice, with experimental sections covering edge detection, image and speech recognition, and more.

The course "Edge Artificial Intelligence: Principles and Practice" was jointly created by Professors Luis Pinuel Moreno and Francisco D. Igual from Complutense University of Madrid and Professor Duan Xiaohui from Peking University. These materials are based on the deep expertise of academic staff, combined with current artificial intelligence technologies for students to engage in hands-on learning.

Professors Luis Pinuel Moreno and Francisco D. Igual, Complutense University of Madrid, said: "Developing this course has been an exciting and extremely rewarding challenge. The needs of the modern classroom are clear, but ever-evolving hardware and software It requires us to be at the top of the ecosystem and provide students with high-quality resources and courses. Therefore, our goal is to ensure that the course can continue to be tested and refined with a large student population."

Professor Duan Xiaohui from Peking University said: "Edge AI has been a foundational course at our university for many years, as students are eager to learn the skills necessary to be equipped with the future of AI. Our students played a key role in creating this course and are proud to To see their projects become part of the learning material that will be used around the world. Their perspective and insight will be critical in creating truly compelling, accessible AI courses."

The complete course design includes eight experiments, with relevant lecture notes and corresponding teaching slides, and also provides an introductory guide, which covers the basic algorithms and typical applications of edge artificial intelligence, following the form of case studies, suitable for typical semester courses. All material comes with source files and is available in its entirety. This open and flexible approach enables academic institutions not only to teach a complete course, but also to customize or adapt it to the specific needs of each instructor.

The processors used in the course are Imagination's GPUs, and are connected to high-level artificial intelligence languages such as Tensor Flow through Imagination's "NC-SDK-AC" Neural Computing Software Development Kit (Academic Edition). The hardware used for this course is the BeagleBone® AI-64 board from BeagleBoard.org® 2022, available from worldwide distributor Digi-Key.

Christine Long, CEO of BeagleBoard.org said: "It's great to see our close relationship with Imagination continue to grow. Their PowerVR SGX530 GPU appeared on the first BeagleBoard, and the 8XE-family GPU is featured on our latest board. Important features have been added, including OpenCL support. We want to ensure that the next generation of developers can get the right hardware to start their academic journey."

YC Wang, DigiKey Global Academic Program Manager, said: "DigiKey is working closely with Imagination to promote RVfpga workshop events globally. Imagination's newly released Edge AI (EdgeAI) course enables young engineers and computer science graduates to master the edge AI knowledge, and we're excited to support it."

Comprehensive academic support

The Imagination Global University Program (IUP) offers a complete learning toolkit, having previously launched two courses - An Introduction to Mobile Graphics and RVfpga: Understanding Computer Architecture. The first is a full-fledged course on mobile graphics for undergraduates, including a rich set of lessons and materials centered around Imagination's PowerVR GPUs.

"RVfpga: Understanding Computer Architecture" is an innovative course designed for undergraduates based on the RISC-V computing architecture. The course includes extensive teaching material and hands-on operations to help students understand the fundamentals of processor architectures, such as IP cores, modified RISC-V cores, and microarchitecture.
