This Meta doctoral fellowship has selected 21 winners from 12 universities, and more than 1/3 of them are Chinese doctoral students.

Just now, Meta announced the 2023 PhD Fellowship list.

The Meta Doctoral Fellowships are designed to reward cutting-edge research by PhD candidates in disciplines such as computer science, engineering and behavioral science. Winners will receive full tuition and fees for two academic years and a $42,000 stipend.

In addition to the generous prize money, winners have many opportunities to network with Meta researchers to learn more about industry research and to deepen their own research.

Now in its 12th year, Meta Doctoral Fellowships have supported more than 200 PhD students from around the world. This year, the organizing committee received more than 3,200 applications from more than 100 universities around the world, and selected 21 winners from 12 universities, of which more than 1/3 are Chinese doctoral students.

The following is the list of award-winning Chinese doctoral students:

Artificial intelligence system hardware and software co-design

Mark Zhao (Stanford University)

Mark Zhao graduated from Cornell University and is now a Ph.D candidate in electrical engineering at Stanford University, supervised by Christos Kozyrakis. His research focuses on the co-design of computer systems and architectures to improve the scalability and efficiency of datacenter-scale applications such as machine learning. He is currently working on data storage and ingestion systems to manage training data in industrial-scale machine learning pipelines.

Victoria Lin (Carnegie Mellon University)

Victoria Lin graduated from Harvard University and is now a PhD student in the Department of Statistics and Machine Learning at Carnegie Mellon University, conducting research under the supervision of Louis-Philippe Morency and Edward Kennedy. Her research focuses on developing causal inference methods to enable principle-based and transparent machine learning in the modern data environment. She is also interested in using machine learning methods to better facilitate the estimation of complex causal effects and counterfactuals.

Yiling Qiao (University of Maryland, College Park)

Yiling Qiao graduated from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and is now a fourth-year Ph.D. student at the University of Maryland, College Park, supervised by Professor Ming Lin. His research interests mainly focus on physics-based simulations. He has been researching differentiable simulations and their applications in virtual/augmented reality, graphics, robotics, and more. Before that, he obtained a BS degree in Computer Science and a BS degree in Mathematics from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and conducted some shape analysis research. During his Ph.D., he interned at Intel Labs, Meta Reality Labs, and NVIDIA.

Jinkun Cao (Carnegie Mellon University)

Jinkun Cao graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is currently a third-year Ph.D. student in robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. His research focuses on the analysis, modeling, and synthesis of human motion in video. Applications range from object tracking to motion synthesis of human characters.

Yue Jiang (Aalto University)

Yue Jiang graduated from the University of Toronto, Canada with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA. He is now studying for a Ph.D. Her research focuses on applying computational methods to adaptive user interfaces. She also worked closely with Prof. Wolfgang Stuerzlinger at Simon Fraser University, Canada, and Prof. Christof Lutteroth, University of Bath, UK, on ​​the OR-Constraint (ORC) adaptive GUI layout project series.

Shuaifeng Jiang (Arizona State University)

Shuaifeng Jiang is a PhD student at Arizona State University's Wireless Intelligence Laboratory. His current research interests focus on wireless communication and sensing, millimeter wave and massive MIMO systems, and machine learning. He graduated from Southeast University with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Dawei Liang (University of Texas at Austin)

Dawei Liang is a doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, working on the intersection of wearable computing, audio recognition, and human-centered AI. His research aims to make smart wearable devices such as smart watches better sense and assist people in the real world. Given the widespread success of embedded motion sensors for automated human understanding, he explores the potential of converting microphones on wearable devices into robust user behavior sensors. He was awarded the Best Paper Honorable Mention Award at ACM ISWC 2022.

Security and Privacy

Xuechen Li (Stanford University)

Xuechen Li is a Ph.D. student in computer science at Stanford University, working on ways to ensure trustworthy and safe machine learning and AI pipelines. Currently focused on improving privacy-preserving machine learning and secure computing for machine learning systems. A graduate of the University of Toronto, he is a frequent reviewer for machine learning conferences and won the Distinguished Reviewer Award at ICML 2022.
