ArcGIS cartography skills: introduction to cartography and point, line, surface symbol production

Purpose:

1. Understand the purpose of map making;

2. Understand the general process of making maps in the ArcMap platform.

3. Master the operation of topographic map generation;

4. Master the correct output method of topographic maps.

5. Understand the basic concepts of point symbols, line symbols, and surface symbols;

6. Understand the role of terrain point symbols, line symbols, and surface symbols in map visualization;

7. Master the production process of topographic map point symbols, line symbols, and surface symbols.

Basic operations for getting started with drawing:

map data loading

1. Open ArcMap and click the Add Data button to pop up a data selection dialog box;

2. Select the 1:10000 topographic map vector data of Xinrong County, and click OK to add the vector data to the data frame.

Modify initialization symbols

1. After the data is loaded, it will be initialized by default. You can see all the loaded layers in the "Content List" window on the right side of the software. Double-click the symbol selector dialog box under the layer;

2. Select a suitable symbol in the default symbol list, and you can preview the symbol in the upper left corner. Click "Color" to change the color of the symbol. In addition, you can modify parameters such as size and angle, and click "OK" to modify the initial symbol.

map layout

1. Click the menu "View" -> "Layout View" to switch to the layout view;

2. Change the map scale to 1:10000, drag the corner of the data frame to drag the data frame to the entire map;

3. Click "File" -> "Page and Print Settings" to pop up the Page and Print Settings dialog box, cancel "Use Printer Paper Settings", and change the paper width and height;

4. Use the "Zoom in" button on the "Layout" toolbar to roughly center the upper part of the map to the center of the view, click "Insert" -> "Title" on the main menu, and the Insert Title box will pop up, and enter the title in the text box " Xinrong County" click OK, the title will be inserted into the map document, drag the title to a suitable position to complete the insertion of the map title;

5. Double-click the title text box to pop up the property dialog box, switch to the "Text" property page and click the "Change Symbol" button to pop up the symbol selector dialog box to change the font and size;

6. Add legend and scale in the same way; click "Insert" -> "Legend" on the main menu, and the legend wizard dialog box will pop up, click "Next" to change the title text, font, size and alignment of the legend, and click "Next ” to complete, insert the map legend and drag the legend to the appropriate position;

7. Click "Insert" -> "Scale Bar" on the main menu to pop up a scale selector dialog box, select the appropriate scale bar on the left, click "OK" to insert the scale bar, drag the scale bar to the appropriate location on the map;

8. Click the "Save" button on the toolbar, select the save path, set the file name and click "OK" to complete the map document creation.

(1) Click [File] in the menu bar, then select [Export Map], set the export to pdf format, set the file name to "topographic map", and the output accuracy to 600dpi;

(2) Select the Format tab, check "Convert marker symbols to faces", and click [Save].

(3) Finish drawing.

New symbol library

Open ArcMap, click Customize—Style Manager, find and click [Styles] in the pop-up dialog box, select [Create New Style] in the pop-up panel, select the save path and name it "Topographic Map Symbol Library", and click on the Style In the References panel, select [OK] to add the newly created symbol library to the Style Manager, as shown in the figure below.

Making Simple Marker Symbols in ArcGIS

1. Expand the symbol library "Topographic Map Symbol Library", select the marker symbol, right-click on the blank space on the right side of the window and select [Marker Symbol] in [New], and the symbol attribute editor dialog box will pop up to edit the point symbol ;

2. View the elevation point parameters in the topographic map diagram. Open the ArcGis Symbol Editor, select Simple Marker Symbol for "Type", and set the unit to mm. Set the size to 0.5, click the down arrow on the right side of the color to pop up a color selection dialog box Principles More Select "CMYK" color mode, set the K value to 100, click "OK" and set the symbol name to "Elevation Point" and the category to "Landform" ;

ArcGIS character marker symbol production

1. Open the FontCreator software and create a new file. Enter the font family name as "Topographic Map 2018210633", select the character set as "Symbol", and click the [OK] button;

2. Click Format—Settings to open the font setting dialog box. On the measurement page and within the space frame line, set the font font ascending letter=1000, ascending letter=1000, Win ascending=1000, and other defaults, and click the [OK] button;

3. Open the character file, select the fifth file, double-click to enter the font editing window. In the font editing window, right-click [Properties], and set the preset width to 1000;

4. Draw the lead point character, select the circle in the sample glyph, and drag it to the font editing window, press the shortcut key F6, on the size page of the conversion window, set the width of the center position = 1000, click [Apply], in On the position page, set the X and Y positions of the center position to 500, click [Apply], and lock the aspect ratio,

5. Draw another circle in the same way, set the width and height of the circle to 150*150, click the [Apply] button, draw another circle with a height and width of 850*850, and right-click to change the direction; the center position is 500* 500, click the [Apply] button;

6. Click the save icon to enter the save as page, select the save path, and click the [Save] button;

7. After drawing all the characters, you can choose to install the font file, write the characters we drew into the operating system, and right-click to select Install.

Using CorelDRAW X6 to Make Topographic Map Point Symbols

1. Create a new blank document with default properties;

2. Select a graphic you want to make, use a screenshot software to take a screenshot, and copy and paste it to the newly created blank document;

3. Change the outline width to 0.15 when drawing symbols, and set the object size according to requirements;

4. After the drawing is completed, hide the base map, use the screenshot tool to copy and paste the screenshot to FontCreator, set the format, and click [Finish];

Simple line symbol making

1. Open the symbol library, select [Line Symbols], right-click on the blank space on the right side of the window, and select [Line Symbol] in [New].

2. Select [Line Symbols], right-click on the blank space in the content display area on the right, and select [new] to create a new linear symbol;

2. Set the line type to [Simple Line Symbol], and set the color to "More Colors" on the property page of the simple line symbol;

(4) Set the color space to "CMYK" on the color picker, and the color value to "C0M40Y100K30";

5. Set the simple line style to solid line, line width 0.15mm, click [OK];

6. Modify the symbol name as Contour Line, and complete the production of Contour Line.

Drawing Line Symbol Making

1. Create a new line symbol;

2. Set the type to [Catographic Line Symbol], the color to K100, the unit to mm, and the line width to 0.3mm;

3. Set the cycle template to 4 black grids, 1 white grid, and the interval is 2.83;

4. Click [OK], change the symbol name to small road, and the symbol type to traffic, and complete the drawing of the small road symbol.

Hash line symbol making

1. Create a new line symbol, set the line symbol type to "simple line symbol", set the color to K100, set the style to "solid line", and set the line width to 0.2;

2. Click "Add Layer", set the line type of the newly added layer to "Hybrid Line Symbol", the angle is 90, click the [Hybrid Symbol] button, and the symbol selector will pop up;

3. Click the edit symbol button, set the line type of the mixed symbol to "simple line symbol", the color to K100, the line style to "solid line", and the line width to 0.15mm, click the [OK] button to return to the symbol selector interface , click the [OK] button;

4. Under the drawing line page of the mixed line, set the color to k100 and the line width to 0.5mm;

5. On the cycle template page of the mixed line, set the template as a black grid and a white grid, with an interval of 2.83;

6. Click the [OK] button, modify the symbol name to dike b2, modify the symbol category to water system, and complete the drawing of the dike b2 symbol.

Simple filling symbol making

1. Create a new surface symbol, open the symbol library, select [Fill Symbols], right-click on the blank space on the right side of the window, and select [Fill Symbol] in [New].

2. Set the area symbol type to "simple fill symbol", the area color to "C10", the outline color to "C100", and the outline width to "0.15mm";

3. Click the [OK] button, modify the symbol name to "Lake", and the symbol category to "Water System" to complete the drawing of the lake symbol.

Mark fill symbol making

1. Draw marker symbols;

2. Draw the land type boundary, create a new surface symbol, set the surface type to "mark fill symbol", click the "mark symbol" button, set the mark symbol to "forest point symbol", click the "contour line" button to set the contour line color is colorless;

3. On the fill property page, set the interval to 20*20, copy the layer, paste the layer, modify the offset to 10*10, switch to the mark fill page, set the outline, and set the outline to "Land Type Boundary" , modify the outline color to "C100Y100", click [OK] to complete the setting of the outline, and click [OK].

(4) Click the OK button, modify the symbol name to "Forest", modify the symbol category to "Vegetation", and complete the drawing of the symbol of the forest.
