Today (May 5), Harbin Institute of Technology officially announced the establishment of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence, with Professor Wang Yadong as the first dean. It is reported that the Institute of Artificial Intelligence of Harbin Institute of Technology will be organized according to 4 levels and 8 directions of "theory, technology, platform and application":


  • The theoretical level includes artificial intelligence and machine learning, intelligent control theory, brain science and brain-like intelligence;

  • The core technology level includes machine perception and pattern recognition, natural language processing and knowledge engineering;

  • The platform level includes hybrid augmented intelligence and autonomous intelligence;

  • The application level includes intelligent manufacturing, intelligent civil engineering, intelligent finance and business, intelligent elderly care, and intelligent remote sensing.

The first batch of 30 researchers will be settled in the institute, with an average age of 40 years old, more than half of them are full professors, and a group of outstanding young and middle-aged scholars in the field of artificial intelligence of Harbin Institute of Technology.


Why did the Harbin Institute of Technology choose to establish an artificial intelligence research institute at this time? From the battalion commander's point of view, this is closely related to the talent gap brought about by the AI ​​wave and HIT's accumulation in the AI ​​field.


The shortage of AI talents


Due to the rapid development of the AI ​​industry, the supply of talents is in short supply, and it is imperative to cultivate AI talents. But the problem is that the popularity of AI subjects in Chinese universities is far less than that of the United States.


According to the "2017 Global Artificial Intelligence Talent White Paper" released by Tencent Research Institute, there are 367 universities in the world with artificial intelligence research directions, of which 168 are in the United States and only 20 in China. (Editor's note: This figure has changed this year.)


Therefore, the Chinese government has begun to promote the construction of AI talents from a policy perspective.


In March last year, the State Council issued the "New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan". The plan pointed out that the construction of high-end talent team should be regarded as the top priority of artificial intelligence development, adhere to the combination of training and introduction, improve the artificial intelligence education system, strengthen talent reserve and echelon construction, especially accelerate the introduction of global top talents and young talents, Form a highland of artificial intelligence talents in my country. Among them, the construction of artificial intelligence discipline is one of the important measures to cultivate artificial intelligence talents for my country.


In December, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Three-Year Action Plan for Promoting the Development of the New Generation Artificial Intelligence Industry (2018-2020)", which also proposed: deepening the reform of the talent system and mechanism. Relying on major engineering projects, encourage school-enterprise cooperation, support colleges and universities to strengthen the construction of artificial intelligence-related disciplines, and guide vocational schools to cultivate skilled talents urgently needed for industrial development.


In order to implement the "Notice of the State Council on Printing and Distributing the New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan", the Ministry of Education officially released the "Artificial Intelligence Innovation Action Plan for Colleges and Universities" in April this year. The plan emphasizes that it is necessary to strengthen the professional construction in the field of artificial intelligence, promote the construction of "new engineering", form a new model of "artificial intelligence + X" compound professional training, and build 100 "artificial intelligence + X" compound specialties by 2020.


As early as last December, Lu Hao (currently the Party Secretary and Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources), who was then Deputy Secretary of the Heilongjiang Provincial Party Committee and Governor, expressed his support for the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of Harbin Institute of Technology and encouraged other universities with scientific research capabilities to establish a comprehensive research institute as soon as possible. The provincial government will provide support for the artificial intelligence research institutes of interdisciplinary and marginal disciplines as the basis for industrialization.


Of course, in addition to policy promotion, Harbin Institute of Technology's own strength is also one of the important factors.


The strength of Harbin Institute of Technology


As early as the 1950s, Harbin Institute of Technology began research on artificial intelligence, almost at the same time as the world's artificial intelligence research. In 1958, Harbin Institute of Technology developed the first computer that could play chess and speak.


Harbin Institute of Technology has a solid foundation in artificial intelligence and a wide coverage. There are 7 first-level disciplines in the school that are closely related to artificial intelligence, of which 4 disciplines such as computer and control are selected as "double first-class" construction disciplines.

除此之外,马萨诸塞大学安姆斯特分校的 Emery Berger 教授还在去年公布了一个全球院校 CS 实力排名的项目 CSRankings,其中人工智能包含了计算机视觉(Computer Vision)、机器学习和数据挖掘(Machine Learning & Data Mining)、自然语言处理(Natural Language Process)、网页和信息检索(The Web & Information Retrieval)等几大项。


由于该排名主要基于院校教员在计算机科学领域的各大顶会所发布的论文数量,因此能够很好地反应国内高校在 AI 领域的国际地位。


如果从整体来看,哈工大的 AI 在整个亚洲可以排到第 17,如果只考虑中国大陆的高校,哈工大可以排进前 10。(如下图所示)

不管是国内外的排名,还是实实在在的成果,哈工大在 AI 领域取得的成绩足以令人瞩目。


因此,哈工大在此时成立人工智能研究院可以说是大势所趋 + 众望所归。
