| Guided reading | The open source Raw image processor RawTherapee 5.4 was released a few days ago. Here's how to install it in Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu 18.04 and derivatives. |
New features in RawTherapee 5.4 include:
- • The new default processing profile is now the default look for raw photos, closely matching the camera look in terms of tones, including lens distortion and vignetting correction.
• New histogram matching tool that allows RawTherapee to automatically adjust images to match camera appearance with the click of a button.
• The new HDR tone mapping tool compresses light in high dynamic range scenes, allowing you to bring out details in shadows and highlights in a realistic way.
• New native contrast tool to improve sharpness with a simple interface.
• New color toning method L*a*b* color correction grid.
• New RCD demosaicing algorithm to minimize artifacts even in artificial lighting and strong chromatic aberration.
• New thumbnail overlay icons on the file browser and film to help you differentiate between normal images in HDR and Pixel Shift.
• Added support for displaying out-of-gamut areas based on output profiles.
• Added support for reading and writing PNG images with metadata and ICC profiles.
• Added support for processing Sony Pixel Shift ARQ raw files - make sure ARQ extensions are enabled in Preferences > File Browser > Analysis Extensions.
• Create Sony ARQ raw files using https://github.com/agriggio/make_arq
• Added support for saving 32-bit floating point TIFF fixed to [0;1].
• Added support for chromatic aberration correction with Lensfun.
• More tools now have an on/off switch.
• The user interface is cleaner and all Power-house tools have been moved into a new "Advanced" tab to prevent newbies from getting into the sliders.
• The Metadata tab now allows you to choose whether you want to save the metadata unchanged, edit the metadata when saving the image, or delete the metadata. Now you can also make metadata changes in batch mode.
• It is now possible to choose whether the main histogram displays information using the work profile or the output profile from the top toolbar of the editor tab.
• Crop tool's aspect ratio now defaults to the image's aspect ratio, and RawTherapee automatically scales to fit the crop when placed.
• ICC profiles of the RGB input type can now be used as output profiles.
• Saved reference images for analysis (created from within the color management tool) now contain metadata.
• PNG and compressed TIFF images use better compression.
• Shortcut Changes: Use "f" to zoom to fit crop, use "Alt+f" to fit entire image.
How to install RawTherapee 5.4 in Ubuntu:
For Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu 18.04 and derivatives, new releases are available through this PPA repository.
1. Open Terminal by Ctrl + Alt + T or by searching "Terminal" from the app launcher. When open, run the command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dhor/myway
Enter your password when prompted (no visual feedback as you type) and press Enter to add the PPA.
2. After that, if the previous version is installed, please upgrade the software via Software Updater:
If you installed from the Ubuntu Software App, the upgrade process may be blocked.
The workaround is to run the following command instead of installing or upgrading RawTherapee:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install rawtherapee
How to remove:
To uninstall the free original developer, run the command in terminal:
sudo apt-get remove --autoremove rawtherapee
Remove the PPA via the "Software and Updates" utility under the "Other Software" tab by removing the line "http://ppa.launchpad.net/dhor/myway/ubuntu".
