Gigabit Ethernet Standard

Gigabit Ethernet (also known as: Gigabit Ethernet) is a network technology for Ethernet frame transmission at gbit/s rate, defined by IEEE802.3.


There are four main types of Gigabit Ethernet transmission cables:

1. Single-mode fiber (1000BaseLX);

2. Multimode fiber:

       2-1. Multimode fiber - long wave (1000BaseLX);

       2-2. Multimode fiber - short wave (1000BaseSX);

3. 150Ω copper cable (1000BaseCX);

4. Use traditional Category 5, Category 5e, Category 6 UTP twisted pair (1000BaseT).


There are four main types of transmission media for Gigabit Ethernet:

1000BaseLX: Long wave, available 62.5μm, 50μm multimode fiber and 9μm single mode fiber, the maximum transmission distance of multimode fiber is 850m, and the maximum transmission distance of single mode is 3000m.

1000BaseSX: short barge, can only use 62.5μm, 50μm multimode fiber, 62.5μm multimode maximum 275m, 50μm multimode maximum 550m.

1000BaseCX: 9-core D-type connector + copper cable, suitable for connection between switches, up to 25m.

1000BaseT: Unshielded twisted pair, usually smoothly upgraded from 100BaseT, up to 100m.
