OpenTracing, an open source distributed service tracing standard under the CNCF Foundation

What is the OpenTracing standard?

OpenTracing ( http://opentracing.io/ ) enables developers to easily add (or replace) tracking system implementations by providing platform-independent and vendor-independent APIs. OpenTracing is providing a unified concept and data standard for distributed tracing around the world.

What level of standard is the OpenTracing standard?

OpenTracing comes from the famous CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation,  https://www.cncf.io/ ). If you are relatively unfamiliar with this name, you must know kubernetes ( http://kubernetes.io/ ), another heavyweight project of this foundation.

As OpenTracing entered the CNCF, the standard has become increasingly sought after by open source and commercial teams.

Which companies and teams have started following OpenTracing?

Companies: UBER, LightStep, Apple, yelp, workiva and more

Open source team: ZIPKIN, appdash, TRACER, JAEGER, GRPC and more

Where does OpenTracing's Contributor come from?

As an open source, international standard, of course, there are members from major companies and teams around the world. The following is a list of the main contributors' github accounts:

  • @adriancole (Adrian Cole)
  • @bcronin (Ben Cronin)  LightStep
  • @bensigelman (Ben Sigelman)  LightStep
  • @bg451 (Brandon Gonzalez)
  • @dkuebric (Dan Kuebrich) AppNeta
  • @michaelsembwever (mck) Apache
  • @pritianka (Priyanka Sharma)  LightStep
  • @slimsag (Stephen Gutekanst)
  • @schottdorf (Tobias Schottdorf)
  • @wu-sheng (Wu Sheng) myself cool
  • @yurishkuro (Yuri Shkuro) Uber

As the owner and developer of sky-walking tracer, I actively participated in the learning and communication process of the protocol in the first year of drafting the protocol, and was honored to be a member of the official team.

What does OpenTracing define?

The standard of OpenTracing is still in its infancy and is being continuously improved. Currently, various concepts such as tracer, span, spanContext, propagation, etc. are defined, and corresponding operations.

How to learn the OpenTracing standard?
