Soft handover is one of the key technologies of WCDMA system. The setting of soft handover algorithm and related parameters directly affects the capacity and service quality of the system. Through the soft handover technology of the WCDMA system, the coverage rate of the cell and the system capacity can be improved. So soft handover technology is a very critical technology in WCDMA system. The system-level simulation of WCDMA is carried out through Matlab, and the traditional soft handover technology is simulated and analyzed, and its defects are proposed. Then, an improved soft handover algorithm is proposed on this basis, and the performance of the improved algorithm is tested analyze. Through research, the influence of WCDMA soft handover on downlink capacity is closely related to the soft handover ratio. Under the same conditions, the improved soft handover algorithm has better soft handover gain value than the traditional soft handover algorithm. The simulation results obtained in this paper can be used as a reference for the practical application of the WCDMA system.

Hard handover, as the name suggests, is forced handover, and its biggest feature is: "first disconnection and then connection"; it mainly refers to the channel handover of mobile stations between base station cells with different carrier frequencies. During the hard handover process, the user mobile equipment only keeps linking with one base station. Once the handover operation is activated, it will cut off the original connection immediately, and then establish a connection with the new base station. During handover from one base station to another, there is a brief interruption in the communication link. The length of this interruption will affect the user's call. Moreover, the hard handover has another defect, that is, the phenomenon of repeated handover frequently occurs at the boundary of the area, which is also called the ping-pong effect. When the channel weakening effect exists, the ping-pong effect is further exacerbated. The solution to this problem is &
