A review of the application progress of gene editing in agriculture

The precise design and cultivation of crops through the targeted and specific modification of the genome is an important issue in the research of crop genetic improvement. Genome editing is expected to provide important strategies and ways to solve this problem. Gao Caixia, a researcher at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is committed to the research of plant genome editing technology innovation and crop molecular design and breeding applications.

Recently, Cell published a review article titled Genome Engineering for Crop Improvement and Future Agriculture by Gao Caixia online. The article summarizes the process of plant genome editing, and introduces in detail the types of plant genome editing heritage modifications, including deletion, base substitution, precise insertion and deletion, and chromosome rearrangement; new crop breeding strategies and new breeding methods based on genome editing are introduced. , Focusing on the latest progress in plant improvement based on genome editing that cannot be achieved by traditional breeding; put forward the challenges faced by plant genome editing and look forward to the future. This work was funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences Strategic Leading Science and Technology Project (Class A) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
