GitLab price increase

GitLab announced changes to the subscription model and price of its products. The notable change is the cancellation of the lowest $4 per person per month Bronze/Starter subscription tier. Currently, the paid purchase is $19 per person per month, so GitLab has increased the price.

The main changes include:

  • Cancel the Bronze/Starter subscription tier of $4 per month
  • Reduce the free CI quota of the GitLab Free subscription level (ie free version)
  • The changed subscription levels have changed from the previous 4 to 3, and the names have also changed: Free, Premium and Ultimate
  • Current Bronze/Starter users can choose to renew for one year at the current price and get upgraded to Premium users at a discounted price
  • The GitLab Free tier will continue to add features, with more than 450 features added last year
  • GitLab will continue to provide SaaS and self-management options for each level

The following is a comparison of the new and old subscription models

▲GitLab new subscription model

GitLab said that the Bronze/Starter tier in the old subscription model failed to meet their expected minimum return on capital (Hurdle Rate) and restricted their investment to improve GitLab. Therefore, GitLab decided to abandon the Bronze/Starter level to help them speed up development according to customers' priority needs , such as improving usability, performance, and enterprise-level security and compliance.
