Microsoft Edge 88 beta adapts to M1, abandons Flash

If you want to use a Chromnium-based browser on a Mac computer with an M1 chip, you do not need to choose Google Chrome from now on.

According to reports from Windows Central , Microsoft's latest beta version of Edge browser has native support for Apple Silicon. Therefore, the performance of the software after being no longer translated by Rosetta 2 will be greatly improved. Last year, Chrome and Firefox were the first to adapt to the M1. Although the adaptation progress was later than the competition, the Edge supported by the native Apple Silicon gave users more choices.

Because Adobe stopped supporting Flash at the end of last year and encouraged users to uninstall related packages, Microsoft also removed Adobe Flash related support in the Edge beta.

In addition to the above features, Microsoft Edge 88 beta version also has a lot of updates.

Deprecated:

  • Deprecated support for FTP protocol. Support for the legacy FTP protocol has been removed from Microsoft Edge. Attempting to navigate to an FTP link will cause the browser to instruct the operating system to open an external application to handle the FTP link.

Security and privacy:

  • If the user's password is found in an online leak, an alert will be generated. Check the user's password with a known compromised repository, and if a match is found, an alert will be issued to the user. To ensure security and privacy, when the user password is checked against the leaked credential database, it will be hashed and encrypted.
  • Automatically upgrade mixed content. Secure pages delivered via HTTPS may contain reference images that are provided via non-secure HTTP. In order to improve privacy and security in Microsoft Edge 88, these images will be retrieved via HTTPS instead. If the image is not available via HTTPS, it will not be loaded.
  • Added browser cookie control. Starting with Microsoft Edge 88, users can delete third-party cookies without affecting first-party cookies. Users can also filter their cookies by first-party or third-party, and sort by name, number of cookies, and the amount of stored and last modified data.

performance:

  • Use the sleep tab to improve browser performance. Sleep tabs improve browser performance by putting inactive tabs to sleep to free up system resources (such as memory and CPU) so that active tabs or other applications can use them. Users can prevent websites from going to sleep and configure the length of time before inactive tabs go to sleep.
  • Improve the startup speed of Microsoft Edge through startup enhancements. In order to improve the startup speed of Microsoft Edge, we have developed a feature called startup promotion. The startup boost enables Microsoft Edge to run in the background, thereby speeding up Microsoft Edge startup.
