I use vnc4 (there are other options, such as TightVNC), so the first step is to install the vnc4server Debian / Ubuntu package on the remote server. After vnc4 is installed, run it once to complete the configuration and set up a VNC password:

You can control the applications and window managers that are started at boot by editing the ~ / .vnc / xstartup file. The default window manager is x-window-manager (X window manager). I prefer Xfce4 because it is lightweight and suitable for remote operation. You can also use Gnome.
To specify the window manager, first comment out the x-window-manager line, and then add a line of the manager process you want to use:

Finally, use a VNC client (xvnc4viewer on Linux and Chicken of the VNC on Mac) to connect to localhost on port 5901 (SSH connects from local port 5901 to remote port 5901) and use your VNC password. Then log in. When you are done, remember to kill the VNC server and your SSH process.
